Finally, i find myself living in duma where for so long i have wanted to try living. its been a long miserable month and a half with quakes, aftershocks, typhoons, no electric etc etc. Now i need some information from the expats who live here, as follows:

1 Does anyone know someplace to get a western style hair cut. im not talking one size fits all short phil cut. im talking about someone who knows these concepts, feathering, layering, thinning, beveling, i have thick wavy hair, i dont wear it long, but i dont wear it short. Davids has messed my hair up for the last time, i will let it grow forever if i have too, until i can find someone who can cut, western/american mens hair.

2 Where is a good private hospital that has a good internist, or diabetes specialist doctor?

3 Best international restaurants to eat at here in dumaguete?

Thanks so much for any comments or help you can provide.

Are you sure that you are asking about Dumaguete and not maybe Cebu or Manila, because I have not heard of any of the things you want to know about...

I have lived here for 4 years in Dumaguete and the surrounding area. I have been to 6 different barbers in that time, including 2 at Robinsons Mall. After all this trial and error I am back to square one with one of the first barbers I have used here. It is call Dumaguete City Baber Shop. I don't know the name of the street but it runs east and west by the main branch of the BPI by the park.
Travel west from BPI and it is almost to the end of that street on your left (south side). It is actually part of the market area. No a/c , nothing fancy, does have a fan though. My barbers name is Jay. He is off on Mondays. All I can tell you is after some very minor trial and error I am getting a haircut very close to what I used to get in the U.S. from a great barber that was also a friend of mine. Don't be scared off by the P40 price as his haircuts are far and above what I'd get at the mall or elsewhere for 3-4 times as much. I do tip Jay well. I'd insist on him. Your call. All I can say of course is try Jay if you want and you be the judge.

Again my opinion only after trying many restaurants around Dumaguete is there are "no one size fits all".
But I can tell you that we are definitely a regular customer to Casablanca 3-4 times a week, and in return we are treated very well.
No we like everything on the menu ? No. But they'll work with you and they have no problem what so ever if you want to substitute something like potato salad instead of rice or something of that nature. Again, all I can say is give it a fair try and again you be the final judge.
I cannot help you on the diabetes issue though. I would think someone on DI has experience in that area though.
    Good luck.

I like the Kasadja barber shop on Locsin St / Larena Drive between Wow Legs University (ACSAT) and Fundation High School on the right coming from town. Never had a bad haircut there and they can handle my wild boys age 3 and 1 yrs old. They give a nice cut and beard trim at a reasonable price. As you become a regular, the haircuts get better with time as they figure out your "style". Like Charlie, I tip my guys well. That reminds me, I need to go by there tomorrow. I am starting to look like Captain Caveman again.

As far as food goes, I really like Captain Ribbers on Silliman Ave between Perdices st and Rizal. Great pulled pork sandwiches on a french roll with slaw inside plus the Cheese Rockets are really tasty. Couple that with a truly "bottomless" iced tea, fair prices and great service, and you will leave satisfied. The ribs are good too!

Mooon Cafe has some interesting dishes with their own twist on Mexican food. The only real disappointment is service is lacking and the food is served over a span of time. If you have more than two in your party, expect to watch each-other eat the main course because it is never served all at once to everyone in the party.

We like some things about the Why Not? - mainly the salad bar and Nua Prad Prik, but if we want a nice big Chef Salad, we go to Shakey's.

Casa Blanca has good food with good service, but if you are enjoying the outdoor seating, be prepared to be harassed every couple of minutes by vendors and beggars. The guard does absolutely nothing to discourage them from practically sitting down with you. Ruins the whole experience for me.

For medical issues, I would suggest that you go to Silliman Medical Center and find a GP you like then get a referral to a specialist. It is a lot less hectic with their computerized queuing up system than roaming the halls of Holy Child trying to find a doctor.

I wish you the best of luck!
