I have read in a novel, that the Chinese are calling Caucasians "Kwai lo" aka "White Devils", I guess it is because the British sold Opium to the Chinese in order to gain influence and trade, maybe "Larry_H" has some historical information, the book is about the Chinese Mafia that is controlled by members of the Han dynasty, the "Chiuchow, they were the last to submit to the Central Authority...

Maybe our future Overlords, time to learn Mandarin...

Yea...Kwai Lo is Cantonese. Lao Wei is Mandarin. Both are used to refer to foreigners. Their literal translation is "white devil". They have no other word for generic foreigner, although a person may also be referred to by the country they are from, such as MeiGui is American.

I've been in China for five years and their language might as well be Martian to me. I know "yi dian" (very little). The word for their country is "middle kingdom", referring to their claim to the middle of the earth.

As I said, I've been in China for five years and each day I find that I have less and less respect for their society. Much of it I don't understand, but of what I do understand I have learned that this is country without any desire for ethics as westerners know it. Every society is different and it really is wrong for me to judge their society, but when I see some of the things I see, I just shake my head and wonder why anyone has nuked them yet.

I can't wait to get out of here....come on July!!!!!

    five years and all wrong

Kwai lo (gwei lo) is cantonese slang, means ghost guy, refers to pale europeans sailing into China. Also those who sailed to China via tropics were called 'hong guizi' or red ghosts 'cause faces burnt red in sun and strange behavior.

Lao wai is mandarin, polite term meaning 'old from outside', refers to all who don't speak chinese, not only caucasians. Lao wai is short for wai guo ren or 'folks from outside', same as japanese gaijin. Lao is polite like in 'laoshi' or elder teacher. Definetily more polite than in PI where we all are amerikano or in Thailand where we are French.

Meiguo (beautiful country) is USA, meiguoren is american. Very polite. Not like folks here call Chinese.

Zhongguo means the central states, not middle kingdom, goes back 2500 years where the central states by Huanghe were the core of Chinese empire. China is the longest civilization and chinese always been to China. Not like racist and colonialist Europe and it's colonies now colonialist.

Funny how amerikano so ignorant and naive, lack of education, culture?

British parliament voted in good democratic order that selling indian opium to chinese is legal. Ofcourse it was illegal to sell to british or to other europeans.

The book is "China White" (revering to pure heroin), from Peter Maas, from 1994, it's seems to be well researched despite it being fiction,
I am at the beginning but this "Triads" seem to be much better organized than the original Mafia, the Chinese seem to be quite bit brighter than the Italians were...
It claims (the book), that it's based one actual facts, "Miguel" do you know about them "Triads"?

If you would have used the J.... People instead of the Chinese People in your picture of the Chinese culture (respectively the J..... Culture) (and I don't mean the Japanese), you for sure would get banned for life...
Funny how we are programmed to avoid antisemitic statements but make without hesitation racist comments about other cultures...
