200 customized mufflers destroyed in Kidawan City | Nation, News, The Philippine Star | philstar.com

KIDAPAWAN CITY, Philippines - Local officials destroyed over the weekend more than 200 customized motorcycle exhaust mufflers seized in a continuing anti-noise pollution campaign that started early this year.

Superintendent Leo Ajero, chief of the Kidapawan City police, said the mufflers fashioned from rolled stainless steel sheets, were designed to produce loud noise, some emitting sounds like clatters of an airborne military Huey helicopter that are annoyingly irritating to others.

“Motorcycles fitted with this kind of mufflers also cause disturbance to people inside worship sites, to students of schools, and to patients in hospitals along the thoroughfares,” Ajero said.

Ajero said the campaign against improvised motorcycle mufflers is being spearheaded by Kidapawan City Mayor Joseph Evangelista.

The office of Evangelista had earlier called on local suppliers of motorcycle parts not to sell the banned mufflers.

    Sorry:rolleyes: If I Had a Hammer..

Sure would be nice if it did happen here as well and please get the ones "without" a muffler too, I would think a lot of scrap metal could be collected...

If Dumaguete would force the bike shops to quitselling these mufflers it would be quite a quiet city. Wink wink.

We don't need that kind of nonsense enforcement here. Things would just get worse - for expats first of course; big bikes included,

Rolled stainless sheets sounds more like open megaphones

    REPUBLIC ACT No. 4136

AN ACT TO COMPILE THE LAWS RELATIVE TO LAND TRANSPORTATION AND TRAFFIC RULES, TO CREATE A LAND TRANSPORTATION COMMISSION AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES

    ARTICLE IV
    Accessories of Motor Vehicles

    Section 34.

(j)Mufflers. - Every motor vehicle propelled by an internal combustion engine shall be equipped with a muffler, and whenever said motor vehicle passes through a street of any city, municipality, or thickly populated district or barrio, the muffler shall not be cut out or disconnected. No motor vehicle shall be operated in such a manner as to cause it to emit or make any unnecessary or disagreeable odor, smoke or noise.

I guess unnecessary /disagreeable would be up to who's interpretation? There is no decibel limit noted in the law, nor is there any standard testing criteria for what is necessary / agreeable...

In any earlier section of the law, I can run my lawnmower full throttle with no muffler under your bedroom window ( but on my property) and I'm not breaking any laws...whether it is "disagreeable" or not.

Yet another law written to maximize corruption and bribery...and minimize any measurable effectiveness.

My personal belief is that my bike should be heard coming two blocks away ( 80 - 87 db)...loud pipes save lives....obnoxious pipes( 95 db + )p*ss people off.

There is a difference between the a single cylinder and a 4 cylinder exhaust pipe note, the 4 cylinder normally sounds very good, your could even say tune, but the single cylinder pop pop combined with the auto gearbox and retarded ignition timing tends to make a drone sound, also the induction noise (air filters removed) adds to a very sh-t annoying noise.
Actually it’s been good to see some of the real bikes around town, not those sissy step through bikes that were designed for girls and the post man.

We're all entitled to our beliefs. Normal conversation is about 60db .. a 20db increase would be perceived as being 4 times as loud. So using your low number your bike would be 4 times louder from 2 blocks away than my conversation with somebody standing next to me. I think we're already at that level in Dumaguete.
My personal belief is that your rights stop when they begin infringing upon mine. I also believe using common sense and wearing a helmet saves lives .. I'll take my chances with a stock muffler ;-)
