I know I'll learn a lot when I have been living there for a short time, but I was curious as to what others thought on the subject. What type of business is needed in the area that is not currently there or is under serving the needs/wants of the community?

    Taco Bell Franchise Costs:

Cash Investment: A stand alone Taco Bell location would be between $1,200,000 and $1,700,000. This does not include land or lease costs.

Requirements: You need to have a net worth of over $1,000,000 and $360,000 in cash available and must commit to open 3 Taco Bell Franchises in 3 years!

Great idea! Love Taco Bell!....sadly...not in the budget:(

Besides that, Philippine Pizza, the Pizza Hut Franchisee in the Phils has exclusive right to Taco Bell in the Phils.

Thinking more on the lines of a local small business for products or services that will only require my wife and I to manage and run. I do make killer burritos and tacos, so a local small shop serving Mexican fast food might be possible.

Think more on the lines of a shopping service, motorbike rental, clothing boutique, store that got stuff foreigners want but its a PIA to get, etc.

    Provide service

I think that that following a few simple rules would help any business be a successful no matter what the product they are selling is:

    1. Have employee eye contact (acknowledgement) and a smile (welcome) for customers as they arrive.

    2. Provide customer service. Acknowledging the customer when they come to the counter, not continue the gossip between employees as the customer waits for service or product.

    3. Price the product so the locals can buy, not just the foreigners.

    4. Keep relatives off the staffs unless they really want to work, hire people who need work, unless the business is just a family charity employment business.

    5. Stock the product you sell and keep the value good. Not cheap product that falls apart, not expensive products that are beyond the average customer's budget.

    6. Do not let employees make additional income by short changing the customers.

    7. Value your customers.

    8. Do not charge a skin tax, it is sign of arrogance.

    9. Train you employee the way you want them to respect the business and your customers.

I believe that the characteristics listed above would make any business successful in any category in Dumaguete. Most of your competitors have no understanding of these concepts.

Just look at the successful businesses in town, McDonalds, Jollibee, even Robinson's and Lee Plaza, and you will find good value, and employees who have been trained to care for the customers as well as you can train a Filipino to do that. Teach all employee that the Customer comes first before gossip.

Larry hahaha .. that was my first thought too.

Larry_H there is no decent mexican food place around that I know of. Resto is a tough way to make a buck though.

There is new Taco Stand in town

There is actually a new Taco stand in town next to Big Boy Liquor for about 3 weeks. Not exactly like Taco Bell, about as close as my typical neighborhood sori-sori store is to a 7-11. However the tacos are excellent. The product line is simple. Taco, taco, taco, only tacos at this time. The tacos sell for 40 P and two fill me up. The name is Taco Tayo. It would be extremely hard to find if it was not two doors north of Big Boy Liquor.

A resto would be also my last choice. That is a tough business.

Dave, good thoughts. I am an American and a capitalist. As a businessperson, I know where my money comes from and those who choose to be my customers have always been/will always be the #1 priority. As far as employees, my wife and I. No one else. Any business we start, if it becomes more than we can handle, then other decisions will need to be made.

We're aren't looking to get rich, just get something started and running smoothly so that if(when) anything happens to me, my wife will have a continuing income.

Is there a shop that rents motorbikes that does it at a professional level. ie: Clean, well-maintained, insured, on-call roadside service for breakdowns/malfunctions? Do you think this could be done at a competitive price to the locals please rent my bike because I can't make the payment and I am about to lose the bike and don't pay attention to the bald tires it will be ok pricing?

There are a few rental places around so competition would be tough I think. Personally I'd cringe at the thought of a novice rider here on one of my bikes.

I had a small grocery store / and beer garden of sorts in Cadiz 24hrs, it was very busy, sold every thing that was possible, 2 ice cream freezer full/ ice etc, but the big but, my employees stole from me if not money my goods, the sis inlaw was the worst, even the ex asawa had itchy fingers, if the profits were put back in by now it I am sure it would have become one of the largest in that city. the ex went back to the squatters now is a OSW hahahaahah
