Hello Everyone, Just arrived in Dumaguete a few days ago after spending some time in Makati and Panglao Island. Not my first time here in the Islands but now it's perhaps for good. Retired Air Force in 2000, retired Civil Service in March of this year and I'm tired. Built up the courage today to finally roam around the city and of course I got lost, but that's nothing compared to that place with the dead fish. Anyway, flagged down a trike and made it back to the hotel. When I was much younger it was cool to roam and get lost, seemed like a game. Not anymore, I actually asked a vendor the direction of the ocean, thinking all I had to do is go in the opposite direction find my hotel, and sit down. Oh no, not that easy, I started heading east until I felt like I was heading west, then I realized this is an island and surrounded by water. Perhaps that explains the hysterical laughter I heard when I began to walk away. Having a little difficulty finding a more permanent place to live, real estate agents don't answer email or texts and I didn't see anything while roaming. Can anyone point me in the right direction to a more comfortable place? I have things I like and things I need but I won't bore you with all that. db "Always be yourself because the people that matter don't mind, and the ones who mind, don't matter."
More information may be helpful "I have things I like and things I need but I won't bore you with all that." I do not think we will be more bored, we were already bored when we got on the computer. O-| Remember most of us are retired with time available and have experience the frustration of trying to find anything here in Dumaguete upon arrival. However if you gave more information, it may be helpful for us to point you in a direction that would help you find something. There is a lot of difference between someone who wants the cooler weather of Valencia, or the view of the ocean, or to listen to the noise of the boulevard every night. That type of information may be helpful for giving you strategic advice.
Steve, I like to walk but my first few days in Dumaguete I didn't get too far from the hotel walking, I hired a trike for the day and toured the whole city and surrounds, it gave me a baseline so I could keep track of where I was. If you do this make sure you pick one that looks in good shape. I tried to pick a good one but the chain on the motorcycle kept slipping off because the adjustment was all used up, otherwise, the driver treated us like family. Get a trike drivers number so you can text him when you need a ride. As many trikes as there are, it can take awhile to flag one down when it's raining.
Steve, hi and welcome! Dumaguete is a nice city although every new place you visit is so easy to get lost, no surprise. I'd recommend you Valencia as a nice place to stay permanently. I can see many expats here happy with air more fresh and temperature lower about 5 degrees. Going here would take about 20 min from Duma considering the road reconstruction annd for a private trip by trike you'll have to pay about 100-150 peso. But discovering this nice and clean city worth it. If you're interested in viewing apartments here I could show you ours as we're about to move out. Feel free to PM me about that. Denis
