Recently I have been working on setting up a media server that would allow me to watch media from my external hard drive from any TV or mobile device in house, and of course, this has to be done wirelessly.

Turned out that my wireless router, that had been my one and only wireless router my entire adult life (WRT54G bought back in 2003 I believe), just couldn't handle the amount of data that needed to be transfered AND deal with the Internet usage.

Ended up getting a WRT610N and this solved all the problems plus some. My internet speeds went from .9Mbs download and .08Mbs upload to 2Mbs down and 1.5Mbs up. After testing the old 54G's wireless throughput I found out it was just slightly more useful than a rock. I was unable to wirelessly transfer data to a wired device faster than 1Mbs. Only problem I have with the WRT610N is the overheating. When it is streaming the video and people are using the Internet it gets hot. Going to take off the cover and drill some holes in it to see if that helps.

Some of you that have speed problems my want to check out your hardware. Might be part of the problem. I've been showing these improved speeds for several days and at different times of day.

You could always put a cooling fan on it.
