119 bikes impounded for defective exhaust

    One hundred nineteen motorbikers have been apprehended by the Traffic Management Office since September 2015 for using defective mufflers who deliberately make a nuisance in the city in violation of a new city ordinance.

    TMO Chief Danny Atillo also revealed that nearly P 60, 000 worth fines were also imposed on the violators, while P 44, 000 of fines and penalties were additionally slapped against them for other various offenses.

    The mere absence of a side mirror “is an impoundable offense,” said Sr P/Insp Robilito Mariano, chief of the highway patrol team.

    Dozens of motorcyles remained impounded in the city hall quadrangle as their owners refused or failed to pay the fines and penalties, knowing they will also spend for its repair and rehabilitation.

    Nevertheless, Atillo has vowed that his office will intensify the crackdown against the misuse of mufflers which generated numerous complaints from inconvenienced citizens.

    It's a good start but the timing makes me question the true motive and if it will continue after the presents are opened.

    For what period those motorbikes will be kept impounded when the owner refuse to pay fine & penalty? Finally these bikes will be sold during a public auction or going straight to a junk shop and the benefits to TMO!

    I think if they went to the junk shop they would end up back on the road,most of them are probably only fit for scrap anyway. It would be nice to see them publicaly crushed and sold for scrap metal!

    I wonder how many of those bikes have high interest money owed on them and the owners say go ahead and repo it?

    Loud exhausts are the least of the probs w Dgte traffic. LTO says aftermarket mufflers are ok, but they can't be defective and local laws can have precedence over natl LTO. Is there an actual ordinance in Dgte regarding noisy mufflers?
