In a span of just 19 hours, four foreign visitors recently found, to their dismay, the ugly side of Dumaguete City after they were robbed of their cash and valuables amounting to P 303, 000.00 in two separate incidents.

A 25-year-old French national Rolan Allain Dupre lost his P 10, 000 cash and mobile phone while having drinks inside a disco bar in downtown Dumaguete at 2:00 in the morning. His ID and license cards were also missing.

Later in the evening, three Chinese nationals from Beijing City lost their I-Phone 6 plus worth P 35, 000; I Phone 4, P 28, 000; Lenovo laptop, P 15, 000; ring with jade stone amounting to P 210, 000; groceries; passports and their IDs to burglars who entered their apartment in Barangay Daro Dumaguete City.

The victims identified as Yang Wang, Yi Liu and Bi Yun Wang requested police assistance when they realized that the main and back doors of the apartment were left unlocked when they left for Robinsons Mall. But it was already too late as the thieves have already gained entry and escaped with their loot. 4 aliens robbed in Dgte in 1 day - NegrosChronicle.com

I believe the term "alien" was in use for foreign visitors long before the sci-fi genre got a hold of it.

Daro appears to be experiencing a crime wave when one counts in those 8 shootings in a week. Strange place for anyone to live or visit. You don't have to be Inspector Clouseau to understand this. Under policing has it's consequences. [IMG]

Per my agreement with Jack, I am not going to restate in excruciating detail my position regarding firearms.

The purpose of this post is to highlight the upcoming Comelec gun ban that begins on January 10th and lasts for 5 months. CNN summarized the gun ban in the below article (link and screen capture attached).

I am very interested to see whether or not the gun ban leads to an increase in crime. My gut feeling is criminals are more inclined to commit crimes when they believe their victims are defenseless, but I will stay open minded as we proceed through the gun ban period.

On the bright side, even though firearms and air/pellet guns are prohibited during the gun ban, you can still carry pepper spray and stun guns for self-defense.

They do this every year. It is not the gun ban that is to blame for the increase in violent crimes, it is the elections. Of course potential assassins probably aren't going to throw their hands up and say, "well shucks! I guess I better brush off the throwing knives since it's illegal to assassinate someone with a gun!"

Jack's request wasn't to stop talking about gun laws/ownership. It was to not bring the recent killing of a foreigner into the political discussion of gun laws/ownership.

Thanks, Wrye, for clarifying Jack's position. I had interpreted his comment to mean that everyone was well aware of my position regarding firearms so there was no need to keep hammering that point. Actually, even if that was his position it did not bother me because at this point I would tend to agree with that position. Cheers.
