I would love to help as I am A+. But age, plus dengue within the last 12 months, plus surgery and cancer treatment within the last 6 months all count me out. A+ is quite common amongst Europeans so I hope others can help this young man.

    Questions regarding blood donations

I have to admit I am a little embarrassed to ask the question...but I do not know my blood type. How do you find out your blood type?....I know is is dark read most of the time......but color is does not seem to be critical except if it looks like San Miguel.

I went to the Red Cross to donate blood about 6 months ago and figured during the process I would find out my blood type. They asked my age and when I said I was 65 hey said they could not accept blood from me. I would still like to donate blood to the Filipino population (without getting married and having the asawa extract it from me forcibly) but do not know where to do it?

After you get done laughing, any advise would be appreciated.

Dave, it's important to know your blood group. If you were involved in any medical emergency, precious time would be lost while they tested you to find out which group you are. There are many diagnostic clinics around Dumaguete that can do the simple test for you to find out your blood group. Although, I would have a second test done, at a different clinic, just to double check and be on the safe side.

As far as donating blood goes, you may find it difficult here based solely on your age. I know it's backward thinking and a bit primitive, but that's the way it is here. In the UK there used to be an age limit of 70. That was removed in 2008 and any age can donate provided they are in good health, even someone with diabetes. They acknowledge that people are living much longer nowadays, and older people are considerably fitter now than they were maybe 30 or 40 years ago. But I guess it will take a few years for the Philippines to catch up with that kind of thinking. If you are really determined to donate, and I applaud your sentiment for doing so, then maybe you could try lying about your age and see what happens.

    Thanks

Yes, I realize that, so I took a chance to show my lack of knowledge on the subject and stupidity for now knowing earlier in my life. I will try to find my blood type next week. I appreciate you information...it is very informative.

Lying in the Philippines? Is that tolerated here? I am not a politician or have been accused of some type of crime committed in front of hundreds of witnesses so it may not be necessary...lol.

I'm sorry, having type O-(negative), universal donor blood, unfortunately due to a 'small' medical problem and drugs used to treat it, I'm not allowed to donate any more. Having been a regular donor from 1988-2008 in Dumaguete, it saddens me more people don't, irregardless of blood group.

I don't know my blood type, the reason is that I have a eye problem passed down from my dad, and because of that I'm not allowed to donate blood to save someones life. Go figure?

Understand your frustration Ron. It makes as much nonsense as women not allowed to donate when they are on a period.

In spite of medical science as proof and evidence, much of the thinking is stuck in the dark ages. Only slightly surprised that leeches arn't used as treatment. There is still a lot of belief in faith healers, sharmans and wak-waks - which is quite at odds with a nation that claims to be 90% catholic. I read in a national newspaper recently that a cure for insomnia is to pray before you go to sleep !!! The only thing that I pray for before going to bed is that I wake up again in the morning.
