    I have 4 dogs, 1 adult rottweiler, 1. 4-1/2 month rottweiler pup, 1. Spits and a mut.

I would like to teach them not to eat any food that might be thrown over the fence (for obvious reasons).
I'm thinking of making up some spicy bread or meat and have some of my local friends walk by and throw it in until they learn. I would think whatever the spice is, it can't have a smell that they can identify before chomping it down.

    Any comments or suggestions?

    Hi expatron,
you need to teach your dogs to only eat from their bowls when you or family members feed them,
when you put the food down you need to have them wait until you/family member says its ok before they start chomping,
this takes a bit of time depending how dedicated you are, but be persistent an the dogs should leave any food they come across as they only eat from their bowls.
your pup maybe a but young but always good to start them young!, but around 1 year plus is good age for rottys, i have 1 and he is a great dog.
    good luck

Just to add its always good if you can feed them all at the same time once a day (early evening) as this would be the sort of time intruders may want to poison them, an then if you think they need it maybe a light meal early morning,
as for mine he is around 5-6 stone in weight and he is only fed once a day in evening,
he only eats from his bowl or my other dogs bowl,
when he was young he ate any garbage! but now he only eats stuff given by us (he also likes small filipino men that lurk in night shadows!)

If you dog eats anywhere except from their feeding bowl perhaps a mild elec shock will do the job in a stubborn or head strong dog lol, similar to what is used in dog training collars or electric fences, normally once is enough sounds cruel but sometimes you have to cruel to be kind, better than the dog suffering for hours with a stomach fool of bait / poison or crushed glass.

Thanks everyone for the tips. I am very strict with my dogs and have trained my helper and family to only feed them in their bowls. The rotty's (even the pup) will sit and wait for permission to charge the food bowl, but that has only recently started.

I also walk my Rottys on a regular basis and will start seeding the route with bread and teaching them to walk past without eating.

AS far as shock collar's. I agree (as a last result) may help and (as stated) is better than a gut full of poison or glass.. Here is a link I found to order them.

My dog learned to dig holes in the flowerbed and sh*t on the porch all by himself.

I don't know, but you could throw (as long as he doesn't see it's you) a piece old pork or bread close to him and see what happens.

The reason I'm so intense on this is because my adult Rotty was sick 3 years ago, the Vet did a blood test and said it was poison. He went on to say that sometimes bad guys will do that to clear the way for a break in. I haven't had any other problems, but with the new puppy I figure it's time I get in gear to avoid any future problem.

My 2 other small dogs are the first alert and wake up the big tooth ones.:D
