Just a heads up, I know there are at least 5 of you who live within a kilometer of my in-laws house in Combado Bacong. My wife's 2 year old nephew staying at my in-laws went into the hospital this morning with Dengue.
SORRY TO HEAR THAT M8 , The rain we had would have made it more important than ever to tip out any containers of water around the house. thats not a cure but it helps cheers
Thanks for the heads up Pat. I too, know a lot of people who live in Bacong. One lost their oldest daughter recently. It happened very fast. She was fine one day. The next day complaining she was hot and didn't feel well, and the next day she was gone. Very sad! If you suspect it is Dengue it is important to get medical help ASAP! There has been numerous cases in Dumaguete this year also. I don't know if it is more than usual, but it pays to be careful, as much as possible. Dengue Fever Symptoms How is dengue fever diagnosed? DOH says the number of Dengue cases in Central Visayas from January-May 2013 roughly double the same period last year. Luckily, at least so far, reported fatalities have not increased proportionally. DOH-7 raises alert on rise of dengue in Central Visayas
Dengue Update: The boy spent a week in the Provincial Hospital, and the was sent home a week ago. Since then, he will not eat, has diarrhea, and drinks a lot of water (thankfully). So today we are putting him into Holy Child Hospital. Seems like the Dengue, if that is what it is, must have caused a viral infection. So perhaps the warnings about the Provincial Hospital treatment are sadly true.
Has he been tested for Amoeba? I had this in 2010, can be from contaminated water or from poor hygiene from a contaminated person, it takes 2 weeks to show up in your system once infected. I think I contracted mine from a dirty food handler as I don’t drink the local water.
Pat, you will recall how cramped it was at the Provincial when we were there at Christmas for Project Santa. The beds are so close together that cross-infection is almost automatic, and other than prematurity, cross-infection is the biggest cause of death there. Florence Nightingale, the mother of nursing, found that during the Crimean war, the principle cause of death from those who had amputations was not the surgery, but post-surgery cross-infection by being too close to another patient with open wounds. A century and a half down the line, and the situation here is the still the same. But the attitude to nursing here is backward. Nurses don't nurse, they don't tend, they dont feed a patient, they dont accurately monitor. All of that is left to relatives, hordes of them arriving and leaving already over full wards. None of them are sterile when they enter the ward, most not washed, and many unknowingly carrying their own diseases like TB and scabies. The Provincial is full to bursting point, not only with patients from Negros, but many also come from Mindanao. The staff there do the best they can with limited resources, but with the constant coming and going of tending relatives, and with beds often less than 2 foot apart, it is a very unhygenic place. Getting the boy to a private room at Holy Child is a good and kind move on your part. Good luck to the little fella.
Thanks Guys, they were giving him a blood test when I stopped by Holy Child this morning, waiting results to see what they find. The doctor scolded his parents for waiting so long to put him back in the hospital. Btw, the particular private room at HC that he is in is their apparent larger one at 1500p day, has a separate private toilet within the room, aircon, a small wall-mounted tv, and an extra small bed for the parent(s). Glad he is in there and getting (hopefully) the needed care. At the provincial hospital last week, my father-in-law actually had to sleep under the boy's bed, to get some rest, no other place to crash.
I pray for your wife's nephew's full recovery pato. Glad they brought him to the hospital instead of a witch doctor.
