The army and police have halted all combat operations against the New People’s Army in Negros Island in line with President Rodrigo Duterte’s order Monday for a unilateral ceasefire with the communist rebels, effective immediately. The president in his State of the Nation Address declared a unilateral ceasefire with the Communist Party of the Philippines/New People’s Army/National Democratic Front effective immediately, “to immediately stop violence on the ground, restore peace in the communities and provide an enabling environment conducive to the resumption of the peace talks”. He also called on the NDF and its forces to respond accordingly. Under the direction of the CPP, the National Operational Command of the New People’s Army yesterday ordered all territorial and unit commands of the NPA, including all units of the people’s militias, to stay on active defense mode as they welcome the unilateral ceasefire declaration of Duterte and await its operational details, Ka Oris, NPA National Operational Command spokesperson, said in statement posted on the NDF website. One of my builders was an NPA returnee from I dunno the last time some folks surrendered. Nice bloke, still a card carrying member of the CP though.
