Is evidence really important Jack? It seems that eyewitness testimony (even when they are lying) matters more than ANYTHING else, no matter what photographic or other evidence may show.
In the real world YEP! but........................... Anywhere else in the World of proper Judicial Systems & with a Good Defence Lawyer these men would walk. Even the judges, would question the chain having seen the Photo.
Well we are in the country where we could have a security video of an incident along with numerous cell phone video's taken as well all saying one thing yet *eye witness* testimony could be completely and totally different and that eye witness testimony is more important and valid. I think it comes to the fact its easier telling a non sentient camera that its a liar then calling a person who is a liar a liar. After all no one wants to lose face or cause someone else to lose face. We just have to wait until we have sentient camera's that kill people I guess....
I seem to recall someone was convicted of murder because of eyewitness testimony even though he wasn't in the country yet.
To take this thought to the next step, everyone listening to the "eyewitness" is loosing face by admitting by omission that they are too stupid to understand what they are seeing. Maybe a room full of people being called brain dead idiots is less offensive than calling someone a liar in the "loosing face hierarchy"?
This is a concept that crosses my mind now and then. When someone lies to you, they are saying several things. They don't respect you. You don't deserve to hear the truth. You aren't smart enough to tell when you are being lied to. If by some miracle someone clued you in that you were being lied to it wouldn't matter anyway because there evidently is nothing you could do about it that matters. Wouldn't I be losing face to not call you a liar if you are telling me lies? Why is their face more important than my face?
Way to much thought being put into this "cultural phenomenon" . Many (most?) Filipinos lie, even over the most trivial subjects (and even when the truth has no negative repercussions), simple as that. Your thoughts/feelings/loss of face is not, and never will be, taken into consideration.
