Hello again , i am here with another perhaps silly question..? what documents do you need to carry with you at all times.. do you always need your passport..? First as a tourist.. then as a longer term resident...? do you carry any special typed of wallet.. i see all kinds of secret belts and pouches etc.. all seem so extreme.. do i need to have my wallet attach to my belt with a chain..? what about going to the beach..? what would you do with your cash passport etc.. to go swimming..? I am probably over thinking this for now... i have a decent regular wallet that goes in my front pocket instead of the back pocket.. this is harder to pick... but it does not hold my passport...? also not waterproof..? Sorry to bother you all with this but it is on my mind.. thanks

Hi Rob, I'm going on 17 years and I have never been asked for my Passport. All you need is your drivers license and rego if you are behind the wheel. I know the law says something different, but I have never seen it enforced.

He won't have a local license so carrying a photo copy of his passport (with the picture and the entry stamp). This will allow you to prove that you have been here less than 90 days in case you are stopped. This is the longest you are allowed to drive on a foreign license. Before I had my local license, and learned how to avoid checkpoints, I had been asked several times for my passport to prove that (by the evil nazi boot LTO lady). I had my bike impounded once for not being able to prove that as well....by the same b&*#+. Once you are here for two extensions you will need to carry the card that the immigration issues. I have been asked once for that as well by a cop with a chip on his shoulder. Before your first 90 days are up you should get your local license.

As for what to do with your stuff when you are swimming or whatever, I'm sure you will find a lady friend to help you out with that soon enough. You shouldn't worry too much about pickpockets, but always be aware of your surroundings. If there are some shady looking people around giving you a bit too much attention you should leave the area. Common sense applies.

Just FYI concerning the crime here. If you like to drink heavily you will make yourself a target. Conduct yourself in a friendly, socially acceptable way and control your intake.....basically be a responsible and respectable adult and nobody will mess with you.

There was a bit of a problem in the past, I don't know how it's now, but when pasing drinking/drunk Filipinos I was often asked to have a shot with them and it was at times difficult to get out of it, I started to tell them that I have diabetes and not allowed to drink, that helped everytime...

Drinking heavily makes you a target for crime....I could argue that when you drink heavily, especially with your neighbors they will respect you and will watch out for you because you 'fit in'. That has been my observation, but then if your just plain stupid they will get you sober or drunk

Well I suppose if you want the respect of fellow drunkards then go right ahead. Then you can get drunk with your neighbors and get stabbed or shot during a drunken argument.

I take it you post that in jest.

How freaking slow do you drive? All I hear from the drunks on the side of the road are "Wooo! Hey Joe!". I'm certainly not driving slow enough for them to walk along the side of my bike, carry on a conversation and get offered some beverages.

If you are walking around town and they ask just smile, wave and act like you don't understand them. If at a bar get the attention of an employee or bouncer and give them the "I am uncomfortable with this person" look. They will take care of it.
