Seems like the longer I'm here, the less I miss. I don't miss a good bottle of wine any more. A 500p Aussie shiraz or cab is good enough. I've adjusted to the Thai food available here, I could care less about trying to get a good haircut here, I've settled for a few fish I'll eat here, I'm too old to ski or water ski, family in US not interested any more, and so on. However, the one thing I do miss is a good US steak.
100% agree. Even "good steaks" here dont have the marbeling I want. My wife and I would buy a side of beef twice a year and my parents know what I want to eat when I visit....it is not fish and rice. What big box store do you miss? I miss Wal-mart and Lowes/Home Depot. That's the REAL HOME DEPOT ya'll, not the local version.
My older son lives in Austin and told me about the brisket and steak there. I liked Costco and Home Depot. In California we had In-n-Out Burger, the best. I would be happy for a Taco Bell here
Not sure if it is available or still an option but at Le-Residencia Inn on the Boulevard in Dumaguete..... years back I ate many a mouth watering steak on a brazing hot plate that was imported from Australia and much cheaper than Why-Nots insane 3 to 4 thousand peso for a fatty (but good) steak!
Decent steaks are easily sourced here these days. Restaurants really can't justify the extreme prices when it can be done better at home for a fraction of the price.
Not a fan of large steaks, I do miss my Edam Cheese, or even proper Gouda cheese, Boerenkool (kale) red beets, brussels sprouts, Rookworst (smoked sausage) and a better (wider) selection of meat toppings for my bread. Occasionally I'll have my daughter send a balikbayan box from the Netherlands with goodies that don't go bad, but they're always finished long before the next box lol. I'm not complaining though, life is good here.
I drink that price range now in Australia so guess I will be ok........ When I did a extended stay before it was good bread I missed, cannot eat that sweet bread.
I don't know how long ago that extended stay was, but nowadays you can get decent bread here (not sweet).
Blairs Proper Foods makes bread/bagels which are very good. If my memory is correct they bake a small quantity M-T-Th F-Sat. Breads usually come out of the oven around 11:00 am. They are located on the Dumaguete-Valencia road in one of the mini malls about a Km or two before Valencia, south side of the highway.
