Duterte wants to change the Constitution to lift restrictive foreign investment laws as part of his eight-point economic plan to boost the economy, a senior aide said on Thursday. He also plans to spend more to address crumbling infrastructure and make it easier to do business overall, Carlos “Sonny” Dominguez, widely tipped to secure a Cabinet post, told reporters. “We will ensure the attractiveness of the Philippines to foreign direct investment by addressing the restrictive economic provisions of the constitution,” said Dominguez, a member of Duterte’s transition team. Hopefully they remove any law that restricts foreigners to only owning a percentage. If I invest 100% I should own 100%. Anything less and I'm not interested.
Its remarkable how so many politicians plan to spend money and yet few tell where the money will come from.
He could start by charging public officials to keep their positions. How many do you think would quit?
I'm curious on the laws being changed to allow better foreign ownership of business's and property including land. However I'm also worried about the risk of the Philippines becoming foreign owned where most locals could be left out of ownership other then the areas no one else would want. I don't see the problem as the small foreigner living here who wants to own a house and the land that its and their business. The problem is huge foreign corporations and firms buying up tons of land as they have very deep pockets and then bleeding everyone else dry with insane leases and rental prices. Then also foreign big business's coming into a business sector and with their money and power taking over the entire business sector of an area forcing small business's out (think of Walmart and such forcing out small family owned grocery stores and so forth because no way to compete on prices and the big business can easily afford to deal at a loss for months or a year+ to drive out competition). Just hoping they don't go the route a number of other countries have gone allowing the country to get foreign owned outright.
I think one of the biggest culprits for the widespread corruption in the country is that government officials don't get paid a livable wage. Making them pay to keep a spot would only make the situation worse.
Very true for the smaller government officials. Try being an LTO chief or Police chief in a city and living comfortably off of that. Barangay Captains get paid jack which is why most of the time their offices are closed while they are busy tending to their family business. Its like this everywhere but the top positions.
It's not any better for the highest ranking government officials. Last time I checked, the president here only makes around P120k a month....or $2571/month (a little over $30k a year). If he lived a lifestyle similar to mine he would be able to throw a little less than $1k into savings every month.
From link above: Despite strong economic growth during President Aquino’s six-year term, one of Asia’s worst rich-poor divides did not improve and one in four Filipinos still live on P50 a day or less. That's pretty sad.
