Hello all. I see a lot of businesses activity on Siquijor, but how is it? Is there really enough business to support the new wave of entrepreneurs arriving?

p.s. honest question from one who cares.

Where exactly is that business activity, is it the entrepreneurs as they wave when they pass by? I see a few lots that are nicely developed but vacant for sell and a very sleepy, isolated island. I guess the beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.

I only know one restaurant (you can really call restaurant) what is not resort-related and it's called Hollyet, or something like that.
A nice place with very good food, one thing we did not like is the owner who came over a bit annoying... must be a german thing. Food can be highly recommended

I met a guy the other day who told me that many people thought Siquijor could become the next Boracay in 10 or 15 years time. I've never been there (hope to do so soon) but wonder if any of you agree with him ?

    Hello all, some comments:

--when I say business activity, I also mean that the price of basic commodities and resources like lumber, cement, and labor has gone up considerably (I have a 20 years of observation). This would indicate demand for building.
-- I haven't visited the restaurant you've mentioned; however, I see evidence of other future "boutique resorts" and their restaurants at the same time that many similar resorts have been idle or gone under. This makes me wonder if there really is enough demand to consume this new capacity of rooms and food service.
-- my interests is narrow and I just want to produce food crops. I guess I'm wondering aloud on this board because I would like to know if it is worth introducing new kinds of food to sell to these new resorts, etc. -- pardon the longish post.

Think it really depends on what sort of customer one wants to attract to a business. Coco Grove, Don Deezco and Coral Cay tend to try for the upper end of the market. Kiwi Dive Resort for underwater worlds etc, the rest, really an assortment of low to middle price range establishments.
There isn't a high enough volume of tourist traffic to Siquijor, to make a fortune in business, just to keep going and provide jobs for the local staff.
Siquijor in my opinion at least, won't become the next Boracay, as the people there don't have the same mentality. The island mainly depends on the remittances from the many Siquijoreans working in Bohol, Cebu, Mindanao and abroad for the basis of it's earning capacity, not really tourism. If they were really interested in tourism, then former Pres. Ramos' statement of the "next Boracay" would have already been well on it's way, I think.

PS (I won't plug my own place, which shall remain nameless!):D
However what we do try to do, is capitalise on the internal island, (LGU & NGO) and local tourist business. Our rooms are very cheap, no frills, you get what you pay for, if you don't like it, there are always other places very close by...... Our venue hosting prices are probably the most competitive on the island, which provides the bulk of our revenue.
We do however, try to ensure that our small restaurant has everything on the menu, the beer cold, staff always attentive, smiling and courteous, something others close by, at times, obviously appear to have forgotten!
