Wondering if foreigners married to filipinas could share with me how much their babies weighed and if the wife needed a c-section? Just got back from 2nd check up and doctor warned us not to let my wife eat too much and get too big because that might result in a C-section because I a little big, only 195lb, but my wife is small and her pelvis might not spread enough for a larger baby to come out. I know KdF is huge so it may not have been a surprise a c-section was necessary. Most foreigners I see around Dgte walking around with kids look to weigh at least 180+. Thanks

Our first, a son, came in at 9lbs, 10oz. That was during our first contract in Saudi. The Egyptian OB was a moron who'd earlier estimated to deliver at 6.5-7lbs based on his inability to read the ultrasound. That difference almost killed the baby. Very very rough delivery...and our son has lifelong cerebral palsy. Fortunately it is mild and only affects his speech and coordination to a degree. But he's bright, working on his second degree, holds a full-time job etc..going as well as he can. Had some skull damage as well from heavy intervention with forceps - and that took about 4 years to resolve...If you even think a c-section would be best - I'd strongly suggest going for it.

Garbonzo, thanks for sharing that difficult story, so glad to here that despite the pitfalls your child is bright and can get an solid education and hopefully live a successful life.
If my wife has a near 10lb baby they would probably have to cut her from the neck down. Today, at about 10 weeks into pregnancy, she only weighed 95 lbs, so I am obviously concerned.

    babie's weights

My first child (2 American parents) was 10 lbs 1 oz. (emergency C-section) My second child (1/2 American, 1/2 Filipino) 7 lbs. (was also a c-section, but not because of size, obviously).
    Good Luck to you!!

Benjamin, thank you for the post, I found it very informative. Actually, it made me feel better because my wife's background included eating many green plant foods, corn, and fruits. I was a little confused early on in the article where they talked about diary products then later cautioned about gaining weight, if I read it correctly. I know calcium is important to both wife and baby but if it results in gaining weight then that is a negative. I was also surprised later in the article when they talk about eating too much fish causes a larger baby, again, if I read that correctly. I will re-read tomorrow. Thanks again.

    Hi Pat,

When my wife gave birth to her first son from a Filipino father who later died. The birth was normal and came out at 7.1.lbs. When my daughter was ready, her head was in the wrong position and got stuck in the pelvis face first, So it was an emergency c-sction. She was 7.5lbs. My wife is normal average size and I'm only 155lbs.

thanks Ron. I have talked to a few people who have mentioned the baby was in the wrong position. Not sure what what is the cause or prevention, will ask our doctor. We are not fearful of a C-section but I assume the recovery on the mother while the baby is in its critical young stage is time consuming and painful. And I wonder if the mother has to take pain drugs while she is nursing the new born and what would be the impact. Exciting but scary.

My wife was back on her feet in only 2 days and home in 4 if I remember right. The pain went away fast and no serious pain medicine. At that time in Cebu the whole thing cost around P60,000 7 years ago. I knew a lady that had a c-section 2 years ago at Silliman and there were some complications and cost P130,000. We had PhilHealth and they paid around half of the bill for us.
    Ron
