i need to call Panamá and normally use skype but the mic jack on my computer is dead so i'm wondering about using a cell fone but it looks like Smart is 40¢ USD a minute (ouch), there's gotta be something cheaper.

can someone please give me a crash course about calling out of the Philippines using a cell fone? can you recommend a carrier, etc

    thanks...

    If your sound card is bad, you might consider going downtown and buying an external sound card, like this;

Usb 2.0 Sound Card - Brand New For Sale Philippines - 49462928

For P200-P300 or so, you plug it into a USB port, and your mic into it...

I bought one at Ace logic a few months ago.

If your computer got bluetooth a BT headset might do the trick. I use that for my Mac.

If it's smartphone to smartphone, you could both download install and use Viber. You can also get international calling cards that are alot cheaper. That is what one of my friends who lives in Dumaguete does when he calls me, I doubt it's much, if any more than 10 cents a minute.

ive researched this option, not so familiar with calling Panama, but i bought a $29USD magicjack and it works perfect free unlimited calling to usa, and canada.. skype is my first option as it is free, just a suggestion check it out. Ive heard a lot about viber, seems to be a local thing i have yet to try it out though..

VOIP.. its a method of ..well *Voice Over Internet Protocol*.. there are many dealers from many places.. pic a nation that chooses to work more with your nation to call of choice..

Thats assuming you can not use 100 percent computer to computer contact..both fall apart here Im afraid..lousy internet so voip or things like Skype or Magic Jack.which Ive owned for over 10 years actuall..worked great in the USA..and calling anyone else to a computer who had one overseas with a decent connect speed.. it does not care what nation to nation..only point to point on IP to IP

Viber is a app that runs on android cellular phones..the advantage to using it is *IF* you are hooked to a free IP..lets say in a resto or coffeeshop? Works better in countries that have larger bandwidth and more free access points.. You can use anther app in your phone via data connects of course..to find out where the closest FREE internet location is.. just a diffent app.. *LOL*
You can use it..instead of paying for the data you need to be connected via internet.. aka VOIP..or per minute charges from your cellular provider..think that might help?

    mic jack problem solved!!!

    hey guys...
thanks for all the suggestions but larry gets the kewpie doll for his USB sound card suggestion.

i had recently built a new computer and, after a few uses, my headset 3.5mm mic plug started falling out of the mic jack on the front of the computer. i tried holding it in place but still couldn't get a solid static free connection. i also tried the mic plug in the mic jacks on the back of the computer but there was no connection (another story). Antec, the case vender, said they'd replace the front panel jack assembly and i've been in communication with them for about 1 month but not getting too far.

however (drum roll, please), prompted by larry, after looking at usb sound cards on the net, i remembered a similar looking device came with my headset and i tried it when i 1st fired up the computer but it didn't work, nor did it work in 2 other computers but i got it out of my ''too good to trash'' stash and plugged it in to the computer and almost immediately, a pop-up tells me my device has been installed and is ready to use so i tried my mic and it WORKED!!! why it works now and not before ???

now... if someone could tell me why the mic jacks on the back of my computer, on the sound card and... the motherboard, don't work.

    thanks guys...
all's well that ends well (si?)

Really? A Kewpie doll? I hope it's not the blow up kind, Rony gets so tired of blowing all the time.

If I had to make a guess, I would guess you need to load or reload the drivers for your motherboard.
