I'm an expat, living in Manila for 5 years. While Burgos street is known for high roller playboys, there are a few decent places around there to visit, that won't over stress the budget. Actually, I had a friend ask me to post about the best place to stay there, so I figured I'd share what I know about the area. This place has clean rooms for 1600 pesos. It's been open for about 3 years already, but still in decent condition. L & B Suites - Home I used to stop by Rouge's now and then for a beer, but that place has fallen into a sad state of disrepair, and the girls there have become pushy, like most other places along the strip. These days, the only place I'll sit and drink, is a little place called the cat house. It just happens to be right around the corner from L & B suites- Cathouse - Makati Bar I like Korean food, and there are several Korean joints along Burgos. I found a place that is a couple of blocks behind the L&B suites, that has authentic, lower priced Korean food. It's called Min Sok. 5655 Don Pedro street, corner of Jacobo. I'm not in any way connected to any of these businesses, just trying to share info with anyone who's interested.
Hey Mark, what was the name of the new hotel that you spotted across the street from the "Clipper" hotel last time I stayed in Makati? You were saying it looked pretty nice inside and reasonably priced..
Nice useful post Dong. I agree with you about the Cathouse. It's an ok place to chill out with a couple of beers. Usually drop in there when I stay at the St. Giles hotel, Makati Avenue corner Kalayaan. When the girls in a place get pushy, it's time to push off and find another watering hole. Some of the owners are too stupid to see that instead of increasing trade it drives it away.
Hi John- I was telling you about the L&B suites... It's across Kalayaan St. from the Clipper hotel. Just 2 blocks East from the Ringside bar. You know, it was a couple of years ago when I was telling you about that place John, and it WAS newly opened back then. :-) The "Great Eastern" hotel is also just a few blocks away from the Burgos strip on Makati ave. They have basic rooms for 1500, but it's a much older establishment. I detected a bit of a mildew smell about the place, but I haven't stayed there in the past several years, so I'm not up to date on renovations. I do know that they now have a brand spanking new multilevel mini-mall right across the street that looks interesting.
No problemo Knowdafish- There's no shortage of Koreans on Burgos, and dozens of Korean food joints in the surrounding blocks. I looked at a couple of places advertising Korean food I saw along Makati ave. and along the other end of Burgos, but wasn't impressed. They were trying to charge 700-800 pesos for each dish! Plus, I saw only a few Westerner tourists eating there, NO Koreans. So after strolling around a few blocks off the main streets, I heard the unmistakable roar of several beer buzzed Koreans, and followed the sound for a couple of blocks to Min Sok. Feeding 3 people some extra tasty bibimbap, a dish of glass noodles, and some bulgogi with all the little dishes of kimchi, ect. that comes with it ran me right around 1000 pesos.
My hangout was the Heckel and Jeckel Sports Bar (not a girlie bar, but nice girls working there) on Jupiter before Handlebar. Owner Jerry a member of Mad Dogs biker club.
Dong, if you do go there, please ask if Jane is still working there, she is from Dumaguete, and tell her Pat said hello. Also, ask for Ruby, and tell her her shining star said hi and watch her blush. Their filipino food is actually pretty good, btw. Cheers
