G'day Dumites Been a while since i dropped in. So i thought i might share a little of what i'm into lately.... Recently started watching Australia's SBS PopAsia program, which is unfortunately full of Kpop and Jpop and absolutely no Pop :( This is sad because there are more Philipinos living in Australia than Koreans and Japanese combined. So, just for your entertainment, here are some of my favourite Pinoy pop MVs This is the Pinay Group "Pop Girls" with their song "Sige Sayaw" This is the Pinay Group "Pop Girls" with their song "Crazy Crazy" The Pinay Girl group Pop Girls ages ranged from 13-16 so they were very young. 3 of them are half Lebanese sisters, 2 of which are twins. Here are some of my favourite Kpop MVs This is "Breathe" by "Miss A" a Korean Girl Group with 2 Chinese girls This is "Nu ABO" by "F(x)" a Korean Girl Group This is "Roly Poly" by "T-ARA)" a Korean Girl Group Now i must include the Korean group which includes Sandara Park who became famous as a singer in Phil before returning to Korea. This is the Korean girl group "2NE1" singing "Lolipop" with the legendary Korean Boy Band "BigBang" This last song is by a local band from here in South Australia, that is currently in the top 10 This is "I love it" by the "Hilltop Hoods" Well, i hope you enjoyed that, if so, say so, and i may add some more cheers and beers PB
Wow, liked the Mocha Girls, and I get a free pass on viewing from asawa since it's music! Since you mentioned the Korean girl bands, I'm curious if the Korean TV dramas have caught on with the Filipino (or mainstram Australian, for that matter ) community in Australia. They seem to be huge with all my wife's Filipina girlfriends here in the States, where they are available on Netflix, and I guess somewhat on YouTube as well. They seem to enjoy them almost as much as Filipino TV shows.
G'day redhorse A workmate who also married a Filipina said RedHorse was a "Bloody good drop". So you like the Mocha Girls, eh? :p Of those 4 girls in the "Take a sip" vid, only Mocha Uson (the tall one) remains, the rest got sacked for being pasaway. They started their own group called "Girlz INK" (INK = Independant Na Kami) under the leadership of Hershey (Ponytail) Since your asawa has given you permission to drool/look at the Mocha Girls, because the sing (as well as move), here are some clips of them perfoming at some of their untelevised gigs. ON THE FLOOR GET UP ISA PA NGA is like Take a zip in that it is an original Mocha song, not a cover like most of their gig music BODY SHOT sa HRC oK, M8, your asawa may rescind yr free pass after this one DROP IT LOW The Mocha girls can be found: every Tuesday sa Mugen Metrowalk, every Wednesday sa Bluewave Macapagal, every Sunday sa Hard Rock Cafe Makati (thursday too i think) My asawa loves the Mocha Girls and Girlz Ink too, and she wants to see them live too (i love my asawa) Not that i know of here in Australia, they mostly seek Filipino movies. My asawa says that Korean movies (dubbed to Tagalog) are the most common asian import movies in the Philippines.
PB, thanks for the links! (and yeah, I think Red Horse is pretty good. Not the devil's brew it's made out to be, just decently strong. I think the alcohol is listed as 7%. Here in the states I think that would be considered malt liquor, which I don't drink, but I agree with some posts I've seen on beer forums that the alcohol content seems hidden (when you drink it at least - might be why it has the reputation!) . But I don't neglect paying homage to patron saint San Miguel either!) Re: Mocha Girls, I also saw that their "Pinay Ako" video seemed to be getting a lot of attention, partly because of a bit of controversy reagrding their brief use of Philippine flag inspired costume. I guess it's technically illegal under Philippines law, but they pointed out that Manny P. does it too, so not sure if they are really in much trouble over it. Might become the new Filipina anthem - at least the younger generation. I'm inspired watch such patriotism in action - over and over "The Mocha girls can be found: every Tuesday sa Mugen Metrowalk, every Wednesday sa Bluewave Macapagal, every Sunday sa Hard Rock Cafe Makati (thursday too i think)" Darn, this year we're flying into Cebu instead of Manila for the first time, no plans to be in Manila at all. And it's been made clear to me that the Mocha Girls do not warrant a Manila road trip!
ALCOHOL & MOCHA (not a drink i'd mix, but a night out to remember :P Walang sapayan Re the beer, i'll take yr word on that topic. Don't drink beer myself (pity), its too bitter for me, i have very sweet tastes. Actually i don't like the tastes of any alchohol. If there is a need to drink, i buy Southern Comfort as it is so sweet that it drowns any alcohol flavour, or Vodka as it has no taste. So the only Filipino alchohol i have tried is a couple of their Vodkas. The 1st occaison was when i 1st married Pren in Marilao, Bulacan. The bride was a little nervous and tense about the whole losing her virginity thing. Thinking that a little alcohol may help her relax, i toddled of the the SM bottleshop and perused the available nasties. There was good ol' Smirnoffs Vodka for about 700php/bottle,.. orrrrrr,...... some local Vodka for 35php/bottle........ So...., being a bit of a kuripot.., i selected the latter.. WOW! that was nasty stuff! Could have used it for paint stripper! When i left for the airport we gave the remaining 80% of the bottle to the hotel staff, who had become our friends. The 2nd time was 2 yrs later at a family night, on Negros, i had acquired a slightly dearer (40-60php) bottle of Vodka (brand forgotten) from a local grocery store. Pren and did not drink much ourselves, but one of her aunties was crawling across the floor chasing the bottle by the end of the night. This one was a little softer on the palate, but still highly lethal. :dnr: Will definately give the San Migel a try next time i am over there, i am sure it will probably be sweet enough for me, as it seems that EVERYTHING, including bread, has a HIGH sugar content over there. It seems you have read Mocha's blog On this page > TOO SEXY FOR THE PHILIPPINE FLAG? « Mocha Blog Mocha did a great job of defending her use of the Flag in her Music Video, even her opponents would be on her side by the end Drats and double drats for you kuya :( But you never know...., as the Mocha Girls do tour internationally, they may also tour nationally, so its possible that they be doing some gigs in Cebu city about the time you arrive. You can live and dream. Or they could tour the US (in yr dreams). LOL,... i bet you are :P Recently i discovered how to permenently save youtube videos to my PC hard drive for inspired patriotic rewatching :D Heres Mocha's youtube channel: mochaphilippines - YouTube
PB, I'm not much of a hard drinker myself, agree you could strip paint with some of the local stuff. As a matterf fact, I can remember that the little local hardware stores used to actually sell glue and paint thinner, etc. in recycled "Ginebra" bottles. Which always made me laugh, because the original contents would have probably worked just as well But if you've got a sweet taste, you should give the local rum here a try, I didn't think it was bad especially mixed with something. Guess because it's sugar/molasses based, and they certainly are experts in that here! Wow, Marilao, Bulacan - I've actually been there! Asawa and I lived for about four years in Valenzuela. It's was originally the southernmost municipality of Bulacan province, but when we were there in the eighties, it had become the northernmost part of Metro Manila. Locals still referred to it as Valenzuela, Bulacan all the time.
Alcohol + Bulacan + music OK, i guess the Tanduay is what you are talking about, i saw "Tanduay" signs everywhere on Negros. That will probably be my drink in the philippines next time i'm there. Normally i'm not fond of rum, but i guess the Tanduay Rhum will be a lot sweeter than the Bundaberg Rum from Qld. Aust. Yes, Marilao is where Pren was living when we met online, then we were married there 8 months later. Mahal Asawa was working in SM Marilao department store. Valenzuela, well well well, what a small world we live in. Have very good friends in Valenzuela. A Pastor of a small church in Barungay Parada, Valenzuela. Very close to the Parada National High School. Actaully slept (spent) one night in Parada. Had sent Pastor Ricki 10,000php to buy tickets for our local air fares (as the Australian agents were ripp offs). Ricki acquired our tickets for about 7,000php and kept the change as instructed (if i bought tickets thru Au agents tickets cost = 15K+ php). Ricki met me at NAIA, brought tickets with him (bad move), we took taxi to LRT to go back to Valenzuela to stay, as flight to Dumaguete was 7:30ish next morning. On the LRT Ricki realised he no longer had tickets! They had fallen out of his pocket in Taxi! We were devo! So, with no aircon and the ticket drama, i dont think i had much sleep in Parada :( before we got up just around 4am to head to NAIA. Fortunately Ricki had saved the ticket code numbers in his phone and Cebu Pathetic reissued the tickets to me (huge sigh of relief). So where did you live in Valenzuela RH? PB - Wow, small world INDEED! We lived on a street called Tamaraw Hill Rd. in Marulas. A hilly but paved barangay road that led down to MacArthur Highway. We were walking distance to MacArthur (well, for me at least, you've no doubt learned Filipinas are not crazy about walking!). This would be the east side of MacArthur, or to the right as you faced north on MacArthur, just a little north of Fatima Hospital & south of the Fatima shrine, landmarks your Asawa will probably recognize. I am absolutely floored by the fact that according to the map looks like there's a Shakey's at or near the intersection now. Nothing like that back then! One of my wife's girlfriends was the receptionist at the hospital front desk and she introduced us. A couple of years later our son was born at Fatima. I was actually there attending school, as I had served in the US Navy 4 years, and it turned out you could attend school in the Philippines on the US GI bill. As you can imagine, a great place for a single (well, for a little while guy to spend a few years at Uncle Sam's expense! I didn't really know all the barangay names, so didn't recognize Parada, but I was able to locate it on Google maps. I was in your general vicinity as the school was on Maysan Rd so I hopped a jeepney up there evey day. I was taking animal science /pre vet, so we did lots of field trips around Bulacan, and sometimes further north. No SM Valenzuela back then. There were some malls in Monumento, but we usually took a bus to SM EDSA, which wasn't bad at all since you caught the bus right at the intersecton with MacArthur. Have not been back to Valenzuela since the SM was built, but looking at where it is on the map it looks pretty close to where a horse farm use to be. You'd never guess, since not visible from MacArthur, but a five minutes walk through a little "squatter area" (Asawa's term), it open up to a large area where they bred Thoroughbreds. Would love to get back up there and take a look around and see how it's changed. Thanks for the opportunity to reminisce! And imagine, it all started with the Mocha Girls Oh yeah, it was Tanduay! Only alcoholic dring made in Philippines other than beer I can drink. A little poured into my bag of coke or sarsi is my backup drink if they run out of beer at the sari-sari store
