My neighbor complained today that my generator is too loud and will I do something! I can't say I blame him. My generator is a 6000 gas and sits on concrete about 70 feet from his place, with a 6 foot concrete wall separating our lots. I put it in the back of my house and close the bedroom windows and back door to block some of the noise coming into my house That places it toward the front of his house which sits back from mine. Any suggestions for reducing the noise? I am wondering if maybe sitting the unit on thick rubber mats may help some or would I have to build some kind of a concrete bunker? Thanks
Setting it on an old tire will help a little, other than that you are looking at building a hollow block shed around it. Larry
Placing it in a properly insulated shed will go a long way in reducing the noise coming from it as will adding an additional muffler. The shed should have plenty of ventilation for cooling, but the vents should be well baffled as they will also reduce noise. Here's one idea, but it would be a lot quieter if it was insulated with styrofoam or the like.
Best idea is concrete bunker door with ventilation at your side not on the neighbor. Once, I used Styrofoam 4x8 cost around 700pesos to cover my glass window and it lessen the noise outside specially the rosters. Recently, my husband bought Glass Wool cost 250/meter for roof insulation, it also lessen the sound of rain, i learned that it also used as acoustic barrier.
I think a sandbag bunker would absorb sound better, taller the walls the better to make direct the sound straight up, adding a second larger muffler as shown on youtube would help also. I think the biggie would be to have the exhaust piped so it would discharge a few inches under water or to a box underground. Sounds like a lot of work but I would do it for me if not my neighbor if I had to use the genset often.
Good idea! Dirt is cheap! If a box or room was built and lined with rice sacks full of sand or dirt it would greatly muffle the sound if used along with a better exhaust system. As long as this area is well ventilated and the vents also baffled I think this would be the hot ticket and still look decent.
Those egg cartons work pretty good as well. I would just make a cheap plywood enclosure and line the inside with those things.
Everything is a sh*t storm in this country if something goes wrong. If your gen catches on fire you probably did something stupid to start with. Seal the egg cartons with some fire resistant chemicals if you don't like doing general maintenance on your gen. Just leave enough distance from the exhaust to the wall of the enclosure so it doesn't get too hot.
Our Nipa Hut burned almost down because of a "Moth" landing in a jar that contained a burning candle (some really stupid religious believe being responsible), there are more things going wrong than one can imagine... I heard that building a hill out of soil then making a pit with access from the back and then planting it heavily to create a dense screen, works very well...
