i'm an OFW and have to settle back in the philippines for a few months until i get my US greencard sorted out. i'm actually a cebu native, but i don't want to go back to my parents' home to avoid being a burden to them or being harassed by relatives to splurge on them. i need to save up my money since i would be on unpaid leave for a few months until i get back to work in the US. i would be going back to the philippines sometime in september here are my issues at this time: 1. affordable apartments or boarding rooms (especially those catering to college students and young professionals) to stay in dumaguete city, preferably in safe neighborhoods where i can also easily have internet service (both for personal subscription and internet cafes for printing/faxing). 2. internet service--are they still on dial-up service in dumaguete? if so, is a landline phone required then? which one would you recommend? 3. temporary/parttime jobs. what's the situation there now? where can i find information on such? i just need something to supplement me, at least pay for my boarding and/or utilities for the meantime. i would really appreciate any help i can get. please help this OFW so i can keep helping my family and a school for special children that i'm helping out for helping me before.
i may have to stay at a hotel for a few days so i can research places on foot, but i would really appreciate guidance on this, especially where to look for accommodations.
Dumaguete city is a university town and plenty of affordable local standard boarding house from 1,500-5,000pesos.Internet cafes are almost everywhere around university area. Safety is your own responsibility. PLDT is available and has better connection. BPO's companies is growing; QUALFON, TELETECH,SPI are still hiring. TUTOR for English or any foreign language is another option. There's plenty of Koreans, chinese and other nationalities wants to learn English-they pay 100-150 per hour, I pay 350 per hour for my daughter's chinese lessons. Good luck!
thanks for the tip on tutoring. i've done some, both with filipinos and koreans. i could at least try my hand on tutoring. i might try to apply for some BPO jobs as well.
Both Smart Bro and Globe offer wireless internet that works fairly well throughout the city. 200p for 5 days of "load" is about average after you buy the appropriate dongle for 1200p or so. You can also sign a 2 year contract and get a monthly rate, but going by your post I don't think you would be here long enough to make that a wise choice.
thank you! by the way, how is laundry done there now? are there still people that would do laundry services for you if you don't have the time to do it yourself? not really looking for a maid, but just some help with a task that would consume my time that i would rather spend on job hunting/going to work. and what appliances are available in boarding houses? i'm concerned with refrigeration since i might want to be able to do some of my own cooking to save some money. what about in furnished apartments? what are the price ranges for boarding houses and the amenities they provide? what about the apartments (price ranges and amenities)?
I havent been too many places in the Philippines that didn't have laundry shops. But to answer your question, yes, there are plenty here.
Laundry, no worries. Plenty of them around Dumaguete. I am not very familiar with boarding houses other than the monthly cost. Which will run you 1k-3k a month. I'd assume most are renting a room and dont allow appliances. You might be better off posting your monthly budget range. Someone might be able to fill you in on what would best suite your budget.
