The mall is being built where the carnivals are held on the national highway, It is called Starmart .My neighbor is on a community board of some sort for the city and told me about it the other day. Also, he said a Chinese group from Cebu bought a large piece of property in that part of town but did not elaborate.
Anyone have any word on if this will be some more of the same or will they specialize in certain products. I don't really see most malls in the Philippines as anything more than just glorified (and sometimes air-conditioned) public markets with higher prices.
You're correct Wrye. here they use malls as a getaway because park areas close by are limited. Dumaguete is much better in this than the rest of the phils though.
As mentioned, the area where the carnivals were held between Cang's and the airport has been walled off and plastered with signs of a future development. It appears it's actually "City Mall." From a Google search, this appears to be an SM project.
Check out their website. It is a different developer putting up City Malls all over the Philippines. They are not SM, their info says they will offer food markets such as Robinson's, as well as offer fast food chains to put in stores. Interesting. CityMall
It seems that City Mall is owned by Double Dragon Properties......which is owned by Injap Investments......which is owned by Edgay "Injap" Sia II.....who was the founder of Mang Inasal.
Ah, sorry PatO, I missed this part of the City Mall website. about citymall It is a joint venture between Sia and Sy.
looks like another traffic problem in the making (city planning, anyone?). glad i live on the south end of duma where the traffic flows pretty good until you get to the robinson intersection i sure hope the new mall developers put a little more planning into the project than the robinson mall developers, kinda nuts that people who arrive by car have to walk down the road in the sun to enter the mall when there's a wide shaded walkway against the building that's ''fenced'' off from the parking area until you get to the mall entrance doors. changing the one-way road around the mall to parking to angle parking on the right side of road sure would make it easier to park the present perpendicular parking, especially for people learning to drive. an outside entrance to the grocery store would be another plus.. just my dos centavos... norm : ))~
