I've heard that the DVD players one purchases in the Philippines will play DVDs from all the encoding regions, but will they play DVDs made to play on PAL systems?

According to this you need a multi-format player.

I bought a Sony DVD player from Robinson. It will not play many of the DVD's I brought from UK.

Yes. I thought that might be the case. But this is the Philippines. I could go back to Robinson Appliances where I bought the player and ask if the one they sold me will play PAL discs, and the answer will be: "Bring the disc in and we can try it." I wrote to the manufacturer, and typically have received no response. I guess I should get a cheap PAL disc and try it.

A bit of internet forum "research" leads me to believe that it's the Chinese branded and manufactured units that are most likely to play everything because they don't care much about protecting licenses of foreign entities. Sony has a reputation to protect so they are more likely to play by rules. One of the problems with Chinese stuff is that tech info is all but absent.
