It is good to have insurance against accidents here but of course the big ones not covered are heart attacks, strokes and such. I think US companies do not bother with it but they do offer accidental death life-insurance hoping that people don’t figure out it is only covering for deaths by accidents like car crashes etc..Me too on going home for serious illness. Use Phil Health to get you into the hospital, self-insure for the short term treatments and fly home to take care of the expensive long term stuff like heart bypass, cancer treatment etc.. which in both of our covered by national health insurance. Not as far as I know. As for charging foreigners more, they can afford it. Pay it of pay the excess when in hospital. Stop whinging! You are in the Philippines!
This is likely the reason why they raised the prices for foreigners, not just "because they want to hate on foreigners". Most here do not pay any taxes other than VAT (you may pay property tax but that is more a gift to a local since you don't actually own the land). It seems fair enough to me.
They do it because they can. Just go to the golf course and see the price difference, Twin Lakes, Apo island. If you did that to a Filipino anywhere else in the world they would raise hell about it but they wouldn't be deported and the guilty party would be penalized for racist practices.
I agree. And it is worth the annual $300.00-340 for older foreigners to assure admission to a hospital which is what the PhilHealth card does for you. That may be important in an emergency. You do need good self-insurance in any case, when the bill comes due at the hospital for immediate payment. They need the foreign subsidy. It seems that the tax base is mostly wealthy Filipinos who are relatively few in number. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
That's just not true. I know in Indiana state parks, and probably many other states, they have different prices on entrance for state residents and out of state residents. It is not out of the norm and it is perfectly understandable. These places are funded by locals and they have every right to recoup costs from those that do not pay local taxes. Absolutely. You definitely won't find such a deal on insurance at such an advanced age (likely with many pre-existing conditions) in the US. However, I'm sure those from Europe, where healthcare is generally seen as a basic human right (of which I agree with), may find these prices offensive.
Where do you self-insure for the short term treatments? In the Philippines? Abroad? Thanks for your suggestions
You might check US companies to see if they have coverage abroad. We do, covered an emergency visit several years ago. But then again, we have my BCBS retired federal employee health insurance, the same insurance congress has created for itself, gold plated for peanuts. THE BEST argument for real "medicare for all," or at least, a private public combo....
