    Hi all

I am moving to Dumaguete this month and I want to have a rough idea what to expect for brown outs.

The province where I live now has a 12 hour brown out once a month (6am to 6 pm) for 'maintenance' of the system. Then there are occasional brownouts of a few minutes to a few hours about twice a month on average. I am frustrated when these occur and every time they occur I tell myself I will get a generator. Then the power comes back on and I forget about it until next time.

So is the prediction for Duma and area better or worse than what I experience now?

I can safely say is it's definitely better than Siquijor. So, unless you are coming from there, I'm sure you'll gradually become as badly disillusioned (as are the majority of electrical consumers, in Negros Oriental) with our 'beloved' Noreco 2 w*nkers, given enough time.

    *sigh

Oh well. Guess I will eventually get a generator that will power a fan, my computer, the tv, and a microwave. The fridge seems to be fine for 12 hours. In fact I think the Philippine models are designed to go for a 12 hour brown out once a month. Its their version of auto defrost.

i'm told by a friend that there's also solar packs that charge a battery and has an inverter. Once i know more i'll post the information for others.

the drawback with generators is diesel fumes on/near your house, noise and maintenance of the generator itself. It's a trade off really....

Solar panels are good except the batteries suck, so Diesel fumes, or new batteries probably once a year, inverter cost for the DC system that is good for only so many hours depending on how many batteries and your consumption , or the cost of fuel for the generator. If you can get a diesel generator, just big enough to power your stuff, and put it far enough away from your home. I think you will be happy, Fuel and some maintenance. you will be lit up in the brown out's no matter how long they last.

    Just my 1 or 2 cent's worth.

    Cheers, Ron

My solution is a nap...no fumes ( I try to keep the personal exhaust to a minimum), or maintenance required. If there is a nice lady around it can be energy consuming, but other wise it is very peaceful and restful. After I wake from my brown out nap, the power is usually on. On hot days, the Mall always has power)and the air conditioning is working too.

I figured when I came here that I could try to modify the behavior of everyone in the Philippines to my "liking" or modify my own "liking" to the reality of the Philippines......I chose the latter. However some days it can be a struggle to modify my acceptance level.

Would a propane fueled generator be available ? The exhaust would be much cleaner. I don't know what propane sells for there but it might be less expensive to run a generator on unless you can buy diesel without road tax ?
