Hi, we want to set up a home network for our business now (so we can stop emailing documents back and forth to each other, lol). I seem to recall there are some serious computer gurus on this Board -- can anyone point me in the right direction to have someone come in and do this for us? In addition, I'd like this person to do some computer "clean-up," getting rid of unnecessary things from hard drives, etc., to free up as much space as possible. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! ~ Sue
We have just two right now - one desktop and one laptop. Yes, we have a new D-Link router and use Sky Cable's service...
In addition, my new desktop arrived with OpenOffice.org installed, and while it's a decent program, I want Microsoft 2010! I have a feeling that I do not have enough memory to have both of these programs, so I will be uninstalling OpenOffice once I have MS2010...
Open office takes disk space but not ram memory. unless it is running. I like open Office and use it quite a bit. The only time I use MS office anymore is when I need to build a database that behaves like a program. Open Office can do this too but I have not learned how to use the basic language required to create the program features. A lot will depend on what kind of computer you have and how much ram and disk space is installed. If you have a router it is easy enough to connect the computers to a network and share files. The real trick is to determine what you want to do with this network. Shared files, shared printers etc. Is there any special business software you have that needs to work on both computers. Answering these kinds of questions before you begin will help to make sure that what you needs is installed or configured. Are you going to need training in how to use the new network? What kind of business is this you are setting up? I do not expect you to answer all these questions here on the forum but the answers will determine what you need.
