I have my own horror stories about eating spam as a young married guy with little money. Could be fried, baked with cloves, raw with an onion on a sandwich. I see it on the menus here in the Philippines sometimes.

My grandpa tricked me into eating it once. The texture is not appealing to me at all. The flavor isn't that great either. I've tried the local variant and wasn't pleased with it either. Corned beef is another I don't care for.

Spam is a throw-together of words from spiced ham. It was an integral part of British Army emergency rations (aka compo) for donkeys years. It could be eaten cold, fried, sliced, diced, or straight out of the tin if you were desperate. If you had other rations, you didnt bother with it, but it was good to swap with German farmers for eggs and bratwurst. If your grub was limited, and you were bloody hungry and anywhere in the world, it was a god send. Over the years, (a lot of them) I probably buried about half a ton of the stuff on the North German plane. In Borneo and the old Malaya, we used to swap the stuff with anyone for anything !!! and invariably got it !!!

What you get here, under the auspices of Spam, is a reformed, re-hydrated, re-hashed, re-branded tin of junk. It sucks.

My mrs seems to think spam is a luxury food here hehe, full of fat when fried yuk. As goes for that wet sloppy stuff they call corned beef here,I dread to think what's gone into that! You can pour the stuff out of the can!

You mean Pure Foods isn't making quality spam!?!?! :p

Have you ever tried Pure Foods Vienna Sausages? Holy crap, I wouldn't feed that stuff to a stray dog. I have yet to have anything that is of quality or remotely "pure" from that company.

I'm with you on both counts - spam and corn beef. One exception would be a great Rueben Sandwich.

That's one of the exceptions. Where do you find a "great Reuben sandwich" at?

The corned beef seems to be a greasy/oily disaster here. I couldn't see the local variant being great on a sandwich.

Thinking about great sandwiches, a hot pastrami with swiss cheese, a big sliced dill pickle, on an onion roll with a little spicy mustard would make a fantastic partner for a couple smb's.
