Having gone to SUMC almost weekly the last 18 mos. for my wife's pregnancy, my physical therapy, and my baby's vaccinations I got to know that hard working young man informally. It is a d*mn shame that a powerful clan here can have the audacity to (allegedly) hire a gun and shoot that guy. Apparently the beef started in the church parking lot Sunday, I wonder if the sermon that night was about the 6th commandment, 'Thou shalt not kill'. Hypocrisy.

Not a good thing for sure.

But I don't know that parking boys are 'hard working'. Showing up for work everyday is just part of working.

You are right lady, you don't know. That guy has to move from one end to the other to direct cars and bikes where to park then hump it back to see if he can get a few pesos from the drivers to feed his family, most of whom don't give him a centavo. Walk a day in his shoes in the heat if you are going to comment on this particular person.

One of the things that came up about what people liked when living here were the good ol fashioned catholic values...

Bah. One end to the other? What's that - 75 meters? I've seen him out there, I doubt he was ever breaking a sweat. There's more than one parking boy at a time out there, leaning on motorcycles when they're waiting for the next person to leave.

In fact I think I saw him the day he was shot, intently escorting a pretty girl across the highway.

And I've talked to him, after he became irritated when I told him I didn't need his services to pull out (not back out) of a parking spot across the street from the hospital;telling him someone named Jesus should be more pleasant.

Some parking boys make a small fortune, with zero professional training, show up when you want, long lunch breaks etc.

    It's just work.

If you're not making enough money-find something better to do.

    - A friend was transfused a pint of blood-free from the hospital blood bank this week. He'd replace it, but so far none of the almost 20 Filipinos he's talked to want to make a quick and easy p500 to help the next patient who needs it by replacing that blood.

Don't tell me about people striving to feed their families on little money.

how does the parking mafia "claim their spot"??? For instance, how does a guy get the much sought after spot at Robinsons parking lot all day? How does that guy dressed head to toe with only his sunglasses showing get the position out in front of Dumaguete Public market?

Nobody challenges these guys, there aren't 20 showing up with a whistle - so how do they get a "license" to own parking spots and perform what they perceive is a service?
