I remember as a boy being told why so many of the big old houses had stumps where once there had been iron railings/ fencing.
War had created the need for more steel and metals to help the armament industries keep up demand.
So this article I have just read, showed to what lenghts some people over the years have gone to, in support of " the war effort" of the past.
What it does not tell, is the loss of life, to achieve the objective, and how can you put a value on those who gave their lives so bravely?
