As both a former Catholic and former military who did some training around Subic, I believe that priest, Father Cullen, who is once again campaigning to keep the US forces out of Subic because of his apparent concern over the child sex trade, is a hypocrite! How could a member of one of the largest pedophile groups (priests in the Catholic Church) in history point at others? He should be petitioning the Pope to clean up the criminal priests and leave the U.S. military to spend their paychecks and assist the Philippines economy. Just my opinion...
Pat, the presence of the USA at Subic may well boost the local economy and safeguard that part of Asia. With reference to what the priest said, the Catholic Church is the largest single Christian Church in the World. Percentage wise it is likely that among'st it's priest it has the highest number of pedophiles, not that I'm trying to justify anything. If an older man from the UK goes on holiday to Thailand it is automatically thought by some people that he is going for sex with young girls/ladies. In some cases that may well be true but not all cases. Father Cullen may well have his reasons for concerns, but he is not responsible for what has and may still be happening within the Catholic Church. like you, he has the right to his opinions, lets keep this a level playing field
John Boy, have a look at the statistics. I know victims of your level playing field. Allow me, as I stated, to voice my opinion, and if someone like you does not agree, tough. But I welcome argument stats. Btw, are you Catholic or just butting in?
Regarding the new (reduced) US presence at Subic, I liked this analogy from a story last October, when I guess it was first announced: "To compare it to a relationship: the U.S. isn’t moving back in, but it’s going to be leaving a few things at the apartment. And it’s a bit more than just a toothbrush." Back to the Future: The U.S. Navy Returns to The Philippines | The Diplomat
SUBIC is the best option and lowest cost transition based on past experience with the location and lots of past facilities to give a head start..But how does moveing back in -displace the PI commerce and PI government activities that now fill the void.....The strategic position is the most robust for "mitigating" the chinese bully actions in the region,it faces china directly and its so close to the areas in dispute...as long as USA has high interest in the issues of the south china sea, interest in resettleing SUBIC is there...Its always americas modern style to put its military foot forward in a reserved way such as moveing hardware to the region first and waiting for the next excuse to justify moveing in US operators and then an excuse for a whole military front..that way its less obvious a US military agressive posture when questions are asked after the whole thing winds down......When i was a kid and wanted to go to the neighbour yard to play,i would throw over some of my toys and that would get their attention and then usually build up to an invitation and then i would have an excuse to go there and then evolve the need to roll over there with a wagon load of play time hardware and we would wail as kids do so well....
While I have sympathy for anybody who has suffered abuse of any type, your bully boy tactics Pat O dont work with me. Everybody including the priest Father Cullen is entitled to his opinion just like me. Had you read the first post carefully, you would see both sides of the arguement. think I'll stay away for awhile, BTW I have never hidden my Christian beliefs and like you I was a Catholic now I'm a Christian or trying to be.
supply and deman In this world there seems use a business approach where there is a purchaser and a purveyor of goods for most things including food, and illegal activities. This applies to the illegal sex trade. I agree with Father Cullen’s stance on the child sex trade. However he seems to use the approach of condemning the purchaser of service only, not the provider. He seems to want to paint the US Military as the purchaser, along with Australian Tourists, and wants to use this excuse limit or remove the US Military. The percent of US Military that participates in the illegal of sexual trade would be an interesting figure, particularly when compared to the pedophile issues within the church. It seems like the military of almost all countries tries to police and correct illegal activities at least when brought to light of the public. The US Military could be accused of being a purchaser of such illegal activity in the sex trade, however so many other visitors are also involved. Those visitors would not visit the Philippines if there was not a supply of “goods” available for purchase. Should all male visitors over that age of puberty be banned from the Philippines? I would think that if Father Cullen is part of the Catholic Church he may want to look at the supply side of the sex trade business. He would certainly have more power and influence in his own power base. The Church has long encouraged large families, with parents that are unable to support themselves and their children. The church’s strong stance on family planning results in an abundance of under educated children that have economic needs. Those needs (including the family approach to sending the children out to meet those needs) are often solved through illegal activities such as sex trade and drugs supply chains. The other issue that helps creates a large supply of children, is the fact that Filipino men do not act responsibly for the economic care of their children, and usually seem to walk away from a pregnant girlfriend when she is 3 to 6 months pregnant without any consequences. This is a whole another element of this problem. It seems to be a fallacy to look only at the purchasers and paint them as the only bad element of this problem, when there is a continuous abundance of supply of services created by lack of family planning on the culture’s part. If either the purchaser or the purveyor of good is eliminated then the problem will be resolved. It is a simply law of supply and demand; a large young Philippine population, and a world wide demand for sexual activity. Controlling the world wide demand is not as easy as controllig the local supply.
I don't think the US should send the Navy to this country unless they are promised a percentage (large percentage) of the oil coming out of the South China Sea. Why should the US come protect the Philippines from China for free?
