Being in the hospitality business, I'm exposed to scum bags on a daily basis and I was just wondering how the matter is dealt with in a native or westerner run hotel or eatery in Dumaguete. Give a few examples of the bull s**t I have to face regularly... *First the classic....after eating three quarters of the meal, complain about a hair in the food.. *Get a piece of plastic or glass with you then same as above... *Food is not cooked to your liking.. *Yesterday the food was much better, today I feel let down and want to speak to the manager.. *Food is not as described.. *The amount is ridiculously little for the price you are charging... *The wine is corked... *Get an empty bottle of out of date item then order the same, drink it, swap bottles and complain... *This is a good one, all the way from Venezuela...how to open a can without pulling the ring, no holes, nothing...pay me a drink and I'll show you how! You got the idea... How do they deal with all this in Dumaguete? Anyone shot, thrown out, battered.....
There are just people like that. its the way they eat for free. I used to work with a guy and everyday he'd call a Mac D or BK and say he was in yesterday and got a really bad meal but was so busy at work he couldn't bring it back (he'd never been there) He just wanted them to "make it right" and give him a free lunch. I was the sales manager at the time and soon as I could find a reason I fired him. This guy would also write bad checks and even wrote them in his check book with red ink.. Sorry but I dont like trust people like that. as for your problem sorry to say its just a part of being in business.
Yes, you're all right it comes with the business and I was just venting my frustration following a recent event.. Over the years I have bitten my tongue so many times that it's reduced to pulp, always with a silly smile on my face. Knowing that pinoys are generally not prepared to take the bait and the bull, I asked the question...just for fun:D
Some of the complaints seem legit. I wouldn't complain, just politely bring my complaints to the server, if it wasn't fixed in a professional/satisfactory manner I wouldn't act like an @ss, I just wouldn't come back. Filipinos don't like confrontation but also do not like to fix anything that is screwed up especially if it costs the business money (regardless if they screwed it up) which kinda makes it difficult to avoid that confrontation. You have to be pretty out of control to get kicked out of a place here.
I was having breakfast with a fellow American and DI member this morning at Mike's Beach Resort. I told him, John, it would be fun to own a small resort like this. He asked me if I was having health problems and if I was crazy and do I realize the hassles you would have with a business like this. I thought of Larry's stories of his Mexican restaurant and then Mike came and joined us and I took one look at Mike and said, yes, I must be crazy. lol It is great to see Mike healthy and smiling with his medical problems behind him (no pun intended).
For many years when I encounter someone like that in my business, (not restaurant), I just tell them they would be better off going somewhere else. If they still complain I ask them to leave and never come back. If they continue to complain I physically throw them out.... gotta be prepared though.
First off not all are westerners. Lotta bad filipino's, lot of bad Chinese, and other non western people as well. But yah lots of westerners like many others trying to scam a free meal or take advantage of something. It also costs the business's more then the government. However in the end still if Filipino's took a stand a bit more maybe we wouldn't need to. Its fairly depressing to see a business screwing over customers and everyone knows but the only one who says something or complains is the westerner. But when yah talk of foreigners trying to get scam a discount or free meal so many here and that you call friends do the same. One that I remember being a hot topic many times is the "Senior Citizen" discounts on stuff. I've seen so many westerners hollar and cajole to get that where they can when the keywords are "Senior Citizen" and they are NOT a Citizen and don't comprehend its a benefit established for those NOT them. However after so many westerners complaining now its accepted it applies to just all old people be them Citizens or not. But not all westerners try and get a free bonus or free meal. I was in Edel Weiss a couple weeks ago and my steak was severely undercooked. I said it to the waitress who called over the manager. The manager asked if I wanted a new one cooked and I just said toss it back on the fire and burn it for another minute. A minute later they brought it right back and I was a happy camper No issues, no problems. I see plenty of us here like that when its a minor issue.
If i encounter any problems with my meal id rather not say a word and just order something else because the more the complain you never know, the person behind the bar might spit on your food! Goodluck with your whinging ive heard too many stories that you think theyre okay with your complains then when you turn around you just didnt know someone/ waiter already spat on your food!
My experience with Pinoy restaurants is that when you tell them in a nice, but affirmative way the order you placed is not up to par (for whatever reason), they will go out of their way to corrcet it. However, I have been the casual observer of several 'westerners' that behaved in a way that would even make me blush and would have thrown them out personally, if I would have had the strength and the guts. I actually apologized for their behaviour to the staff of the establishment as I was a long-nose too and felt utterly embarrassed. Some people (race, creed, colour or whatever else is not important) simply have not gotten a decent education and think only via their wallet.... Vicmico
