Watched this today and reminded me of the city.....wouldn't it be great if we could get this done here? Any architects around? :o Aziza Chaouni: How I brought a river, and my city, back to life | Talk Video | TED.com
I agree Jessica, it would be great. However, a 20 year project here, assuming it could be approved (doubtful), would have little chance of success, for many reasons. imho.
A Great Pity though, if it had been achieved, some time ago, Sendong, might not, have been such a Devastation. JP
Thanks Jessica, you reminded me about the TED website some great topics. TRASH would be a good header that is not yet listed. Just the clearing of most of the Trash ( General Philippines ) in most of the rivers would be a huge improvement. Link to a list of some trash cities. Manila is no 6. (I dunno how many people would be willing to spend their days doing it, but) maybe we could start a trash-cleaning-walking group meetup? lol
Well Jessica we have that sort of thing in Au, where thousands pulled old tires car bodies etc. out of the rivers, picked up hundreds of tons of garbage. But imagine hundreds or maybe even thousands of foreigners wondering around Dumaguete retrieving the garbage that has been dumped by the locals, then how would we get it all to the dump? Maybe we would be arrested because we are taking away someone’s living??? But it would be a good gesture and may just educate the locals of how they are destroying their water ways and surroundings
In the U.S. Costal cleanups are hugely popular and are participated in by people of all walks of life. Not just for boaters or beach go-ers. Unfortunately expecting the same results in participation from most Filipinos would be dismal at best. Probably one the Top 10 reasons I wish to move from the Quezon City/Manila area is the extreme dire state of the waterways. It's a mindset with Filipinos, just toss it in the river, garbage, fecal matter et al. it's a mindset we will not change in my lifetime:(
I was convinced by my x-wife to move to Manila (from Olongapo) into one of her mother's many flats. That was a HUGE mistake. It was about 100 meters from the estero (and even closer to her, extremely poor family). . The stench was unbearable. I ended up making it about a week before giving up and moved into a resort back in Olongapo until I could find another place there. Manila is a cess pool. View attachment 11541
