College of Agriculture at Silliman University – Dumaguete

Silliman University in Dumaguete has various departments and colleges that offer different systems of education within their fields of study. One of these is the College of Agriculture at Silliman University.

The College of Agriculture has a system of education that is relevant for a person to cope with various needs of humanity in these times of change. Every graduate at the College of Agriculture at Silliman University is trained well to effectively manage the ecosystem and develop agricultural areas to the fullest that a good quality of life may be achieved.

The following are the objectives of the College of Agriculture at Silliman University:

(1) The College of Agriculture aims to be developed as an experiential learning center within the Asian Region as well as the Philippines.

(2) The College of Agriculture aims to have an excellent academic atmosphere that is conducive for the development of agriculture professionals who are competent and willing to give a significant contribution to any community and workplace they are in.

(3) The College of Agriculture aims to have a conducive environment where both faculty and staff members can develop professionally that an effective learning may be given to every student for the development of their own community.

(4) The College of Agriculture aims to be listed among the institutions that lead in the programs of agricultural development, extension, and research within the Asian Region.

(5) The College of Agriculture aims to become a member of a network in the Philippines as well as the Asian Region where many of the leading research institutions of agriculture are its members.

(6) The College of Agriculture aims to be a source of limitless seed and animal stock in Dumaguete that has excellent quality.

The College of Agriculture at Silliman University has its humble beginnings in 1913 when a biology teacher named James Eskridge taught gardening basics to elementary students. From this class, a school farm was born with a more comprehensive agricultural program. Then an Agriculture Department at Silliman University was organized with some 50 acres of land in Dumaguete to be developed.

From being a Department of Agriculture, it was elevated and become a School of Agriculture at Silliman University in 1976. In 1981, it was elevated again and became a College of Agriculture at Silliman University and its First College Dean is Dr. Christopher Ablan.

Today, the College of Agriculture is situated in an agricultural complex north of Silliman University main campus that has a land area of 24 hectares.

Since its humble beginnings, the College of Agriculture at Silliman University in Dumaguete was able to adapt and evolve. Now, the teaching and learning within the College of Agriculture are done in various innovative ways.
