The College of Arts and Sciences is one of the colleges that Silliman University is proud of. During the early years of the College of Arts and Sciences, it was composed of the College of Sciences that was under the previous Department of Instruction and the College of Liberal Arts
The following departments existed under the College of Arts and Sciences (in chronological order): Bible in 1902, Biology and Chemistry both in 1909, Mathematics in 1920, English in 1923, and Spanish in 1936.
For decades, the College of Arts and Sciences underwent many modifications regarding the processes of the courses offered within Silliman University. The College of Arts and Sciences starts with a two-year AB course in the year 1909 that leads to a four-year AB course in the year 1921. At the same time, there was also a science course offered by the College of Arts and Sciences that leads to a BS degree with a major in Chemistry.
When the College of Liberal Arts and College of Sciences merged in 1947 to organize the College of Arts and Sciences, more departments were added under the roof of the College of Arts and Sciences of Silliman University. The Agriculture in 1950, followed by the Social Sciences in 1956, then the Speech and Theatre Arts in 1967.
Today, the College of Arts and Sciences of Silliman University has the following departments under it: Speech Department, Social Work, Psychology, Physics, Philosophy and Religion, Mathematics, Filipino and Foreign Languages, History and Political Science, English and Literature, Chemistry, Biology, and Anthropology and Sociology.
The College of Arts and Sciences has various courses offered that suit the variety of demands and needs of the students at Silliman University, the locality of Dumaguete, and the country of the Philippines. Starting from the two degree programs offered to the people of Dumaguete, the College of Arts and Sciences has now 18 major courses that will lead to many degree programs at Silliman University, Dumaguete.
The College of Arts and Sciences seeks to pursue to be excellent in the various dimensions of learning, inquiry, and teaching. For important research and scholarships at Silliman University, the College of Arts and Sciences willingly provide incentives, support, and opportunities to any student or organization.
The College of Arts and Sciences honor the Silliman University’s moral and spiritual value foundation. The College of Arts and Sciences also assures that environmental integrity are maintained and restored by being a responsible steward of entrusted resources. All the curricula and policies within the College of Arts and Sciences are updated regularly that present students of Silliman University may be able to cope with the ever-changing world.
As the College of Arts and Sciences continues to occupy the central position at Silliman University in Dumaguete, it also continuously strives to be an excellent college that produces quality graduates and professionals.
