Department of Filipino and Foreign Languages

The College of Art and Sciences of Silliman University has a number of departments under it. One of these departments is the Department of Filipino and Foreign Languages. The Department of Filipino and Foreign Languages all started in 1917 when the Spanish language was taught as one of the subjects under the College of Art and Sciences.

Eventually, the subject of Spanish language became the Department of Spanish in 1936. In the year 1969, the department was renamed as the Department of Languages. All the instructions and studies in Silliman University about various languages were under the Department of Languages except for the Greek and Hebrew languages that were taught at the Divinity School. All English courses are not under the Department of Languages also.

Many foreign languages were added and offered at the Department of Languages like Mandarin, Nippongo, and Greek. The Spanish language was still the main language that is taught at the Department of Languages.

The name Department of Languages was changed into Department of Filipino and Foreign Languages in the year 1994. In the year 1993, the AB Filipino as well as the MA Filipino are both offered in the Department of Filipino and Foreign Languages in Silliman University.

Today, the Department of Filipino and Foreign Languages under the College of Arts and Sciences in Silliman University offers the following languages in their curricula: Mandarin, French, German, Greek, Nippongo, Latin, Filipino, and Spanish.

The mission of the Department of Filipino and Foreign Languages is interconnected with the mission of the entire Silliman University – to enhance the full potential of a person in appendage to the Christian environment.
