Mt. Makawiwili ridge is a towering 8000 feet high peak that is situated between two mountain peaks among the many ranges of Mt. Kanlaon. It can be found in the city of Canlaon, Negros Oriental which is approximately 9.5 kilometers from the foot of Mt. Kanlaon and 167.5 kilometers from the provincial capital of Dumaguete City.

Mt. Makawiwili is also called the “saddle in the sky”, an appropriate moniker because of its similarity to the object. It is an elevated platform that many climbing enthusiasts and sightseers consider as a perfect vantage point for monitoring the volcanic activities of Mt. Kanlaon, for observing the many life forms in the area, and for appreciating all of Mt. Kanlaon’s phenomenal views. It is also ideal for setting up radio communication satellites. The ridge also provides ample space for a quick rest as well as sufficient camping grounds for backpackers and trekkers.

Climbing Mt. Makawiwili Ridge

Climbing enthusiasts on the way up to the Mt. Kanlaon peak always pass by the ridge. After all it is considered as one of the must stops when trekking the mountains. Aside from the several waterfalls and cascading streams, the ridge is also part of the magnificent natural structure that makes up Mt. Kanlaon. At the crest, one can expect to find panoramic scenes – luxuriant tropical plants clinging on to the rock walls, cloud formations set against the blue sky, and a view of the ocean down below.

Mt. Makawiwili is one of the peaks found in the Mt. Kanlaon National Park, the vast protected forest reserve that runs around the base of the mountains. The park is usually the entry point for the trek up the mountains, containing different trails up to 40 kilometers long. A group can plan for a few hours of hike or for up to several days depending on time restraints and weather conditions. Passing through the Mt. Kanlaon National Park is also a worthwhile experience.

How to get to Mt. Makawiwili Ridge

Canlaon City is estimated to be four hours away from Dumaguete City. Signing up for an organized group tour or climb is the best way to go because then you will be accompanied by experienced tour guides.
