Welcome to Amlan

Amlan is municipality located at the northern part of Dumaguete City. You can reach this place if you ride a jeepney. You can also ride a bus going to Tanjay and other places in Negros and stop by the place. The travel time is about 35-40 minutes away from Dumaguete.  Last 2010 census, it has a population of 22,206 people. And at this year it could be more. Before the name Amlan, a chronicler in the Nineteenth-centurty, Mr Licio Ruiz named the place Amblan which refers to a kind guava. The town used to be a part of Tanjay around 1848. Later on around 1912, it was renamed as the New Ayuquitan. After the World War II, the place was again, renamed as Amlan.

The church in Amlan which is the St. Andrew the Apostle was built around 1853. It took 50 years before the church was finally formed and build. The church is the main attraction of the town. It is also used as a tourism picture as a promotion to invite photographers and tourists who would like to have a colonial period background. There are still ruins of watch-towers against the Spanish pirates that can be seen on Buswang and in the mouth of the Amlan River. Amlan is abundant in their source of living, which is fishing. And as a way of thanksgiving for these blessings, they celebrate Budyas Festival, a traditional ritual on the sea boundaries, where the people prepare offerings to the spirits to give good faith on the fishermen and luck on their daily fishing. They will use the images of the their  two patrons, which is Saint Peter and Paul, and they will have a short parade around the town and they will pass by the Tandayag south chapel then to the Tandayag north chapel where a Mass of thanksgiving will happen. The parade is composed of devotees and a band. After the mass, street dancing in the town plaza would follow.

Amlan is rich in sugar cane and copra, that’s why producers get their supplies here. The local’s main source of living is fishing. They also offer handicrafts like mats, furniture, customized baskets and other handmade items which are produced in the place. They have a wharf, which is a seaport-of-call for Tañon Strait crossers from Cebu. The fuel and LPG of the province of Negros Oriental in also stored in the depots of Amlan. Amlan offers some nature attractions like the Tambojangin River which is composed of fresh water that is good for swimming. Another attraction is the Naibid Falls located in Barangay Jantianon. Now, Amlan opens a new tourist attraction which is the Amlan Dreamland, or the Amlan Zoo which is located in Tandayag. The Dreamland is also a nature and adventure park. Though this place is smaller than the world zoo, but still the zoo is clean at the same time it is cheap but fun. It is worth a little day trip for a family or group of friends. You can spot a lot of animals inside including the tiger and the big snakes. They also have different kinds of birds, monkeys and other kinds of animals.
