History about Bayawan

There is a story about the name Bayawan. It happened one Sunday morning when a tragedy occurred. As the Spaniards conquered this place, one hostile “maghat” (Spanish missionary) came into a ceremony when a priest hoisted the Holy Host as an act of consecration. The “maghat” killed the priest by throwing a lance on the priest. And so this story answers the question on how Bayawan got its name. “Bayaw” means to hoist. Bayawan used to be known as Tolong Nuevo which is established by the Spanish Missionaries. As part of this area is now known the Municipality of Santa Catalina. Bayawan finally became a city on the year 2000 December 24.

The scarecrow is used to protect their harvest in the farm. In thanksgiving, this is used as a portrait the rich culture and history of Bayawan City. The people will always be excited to look forward to this event as the people would look up to tawo-tawo, the scarecrow that scares those “maya” birds away. These birds feed on the grains of rice, which can affect the entire farm and yield. As the people are happy of the abundance of harvest, this festival is created and formed as a thanksgiving event. The there would be dancers who would wear outfits representing farmers, scarecrows, carabaos and maya birds. They would do a parade and dance in the streets. The choreography of the dance is the movements in the events of the farm.
