Just thought I would share my solution for staying online even in brownouts.

Especially good for those needing internet connection for work.

So I have internet access through PLDT fiber.

When brownouts I was loosing connection.

I bought a UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) on Lazada. Chose the biggest I could find (3000VA) and have all my computer related devices including the modem connected to it.

Now when the power goes out I still have internet, TV,. Xbox and the whole lot.

This was definitely worth it.

Not reccomended to run large fans or air-conditioning, small fans ok.

You can use LED bulbs and have light in brownouts also.

Curious what best veggies and such folks have been able to grow.

For us; okra grows well and we eat tons of it. Patula (hope I spelt that correct) a local gourd, tastes fine to me when cooked. Have had very good luck with cucumbers...some issues with cucumber bugs but they move relatively slow in the mornings so not too hard to pick off and dispose of. She did have enough luck with cucumbers to be able to give many away. Definitely will keep growing cucumbers...picked up some seeds of the smaller, pickling variety ones to try out as well.

Beans do very well also; I love black eyed peas and brought back a few bags before to eat, planted some seeds and they did well. The wife picks them when the are still green to use in cooking and loves them. She plans to plant some more. I am bringing back some purple string beans that I grew years ago and expect them to do well again. Also bringing back some sweet peas, not sure they will do as well but do love the pods.

Chilis...we only grew Indian peppers we picked up in Singapore this year. They were about the most prolific we have grown, so much so the wife is giving both peppers and seeds away to her friends as there is way more than she can use. She cooks with them everyday and doesn't find them spicy but the workers say they are a bit hotter coming out than going in.

The wife has a similar resistance to spice as I have so I picked up some Ghost pepper seeds that I will try to grow when I get home. As we have so many seeds from those Indian peppers we will grow those again as well. Also looking to grow a plant or 2 of the small peppers that are so common...many times a few of those little ones go a long way.

Tomatoes have been hit and miss over the years but have done fairly decent this last planting with cherry tomatoes. Not sure why they have worked better that the larger varieties but actually prefer cherry tomatoes personally...especially in a cucumber salad. I'll keep trying the larger varieties though and see if I can finally get them to produce.

The only real different thing I will try and grow are cantaloupe. Never tried to grow them, have had mixed results with other melons.

Optical phenomena pervade the atmosphere here in our jungle paradise.
Solar halos are caused by light being refracted twice thru hexagonal ice crystals in the upper atmosphere. If you do the Geometry, this works out to the halos having an approximate radius of 22 degrees. Red light refracts at the smallest angle, so you will note that the inside of the halo is always red.
Sunbeams are rays of light being reflected by moisture, dust particles, clouds, etc..
When they occur near twilight, they are called crepuscular rays.
Interesting to note that these rays are actually parallel to each other!
(think about looking down a long set of railroad tracks)

A new rookie in town

So, I have arrived in Dumaguete and started to explore and digging into expenses etc. Just to be clear, I did not come here to save, but hey! who wants to pay more then u should right?

I travel..A LOT... always did, so I am pretty familiar with expenses and 'turist traps'.
I am not your typical haggler, I rather just say no thx.

Back to Dumaguete and Philippines.... I have been told so many times that Philippines is so darn cheap! Ok..compared to what?
Norway? YES!
Singapore? YES!
Thailand? NO !
Indonesia? NO!
Portugal then? NO!
Italy it must be! NO!

If you compare what you really get in small towns in certain European countries, I would say Philippines is not cheap.

Many come for the weather, yes.. it's warm and I love it too.

Some come to drink cheaper, well, in some countries in Europe you pay even less for the alcohol (for those that thinks it is important)

Rentals and property prices then? No, I know from experience that it's same or more expensive even (again quality and standard)

So why are you here then you might ask?
Well, I am here for the feeling I get being with the people here. Sure Bulgaria is dead cheap, but I don't like the macho mentality. I do love their tomatoes tho Portugal has good cheap rentals, wine, food, beaches and more..but people are not that open as here, and they got a colder winter .brrrrr.

But this post was about prices and they are not surprisingly low...as some say

If you read this forum considering coming here to save money only, there are many other options. If you cherish many of the same things as me in how the population is and behaves, Philippines can be a good place for you too.

Has anybody else tried the new Korean restaurant on the blvd yet called Kimstaurant? I was happy to see this place open as I love Korean food. Going inside it is nice and spacious and modern looking, so I had high hopes. We found the menu to be a bit pricey with most of the main menu items being in the 400 to 700 peso range. Anyway, we ordered four dishes for the two of us to get a good sampling of their food. It was a major disappointment for me, even though I was very hungry I couldn't eat more than just a few bites from each dish. We decided to just leave shortly after the food arrived. They asked if we would like it packed for take out and we just said no thanks, paid our 1400 peso bill, and left and walked down to Casablanca for one of their giant burgers for 275 pesos which we split and filled us both up. We go to the Soban Korean food restaurant by City Mall all the time, and love just about everything on their menu, and I was happy when I saw Kimstaurant open ... but, it was very disappointing.

 

This place had their grand opening last week their claim to fame is going to be Micro beer and good food, from my experience yesterday the claim to fame went down the drain. Myself and 8 friends went to check the place out, only 1 brew available and we were notified after one hour that there was no more beer and the next batch would not be ready until August 28 so no beer for 1 week and the local san mig beer they don't stock. Six meals were sampled and all of them got negative reviews. We all know the phrase.'' There is no second chance to make a first good impression'' This is certainly applicable to our visit yesterday.

 

This report had been confirmed by PNP that 3 separate stabbing incidents had happened around the city. The 3 suspects are riding a Smash motorcycle and what they do is just to randomly stab anyone they see. The 3 stabbing incidents happened around 12:00 am and the 3 victims were stabbed with ice picks as the suspects would just drive by aboard their Smash motorcycle. Just be careful. These 3 suspects could be drug addicts, who knows? Why should they do that? Don't get confused---there are 3 suspects and there had been 3 victims already.

 

Last night approximately 10 pm, heard an attempt to open sliding glass window in the rear my house. Waited a few moments and partially opened curtain panel. Saw a man walking away from the window. There’s security bars on all the window frames.

Please no comments that I probably deserved the attempted breakin or he was only checking the windows for security purposes.

PNP and numerous barangay men arrived very quickly. They made a search but the man was gone. I am very grateful for their prompt arrival and search.

This post is for those that are concerned about security awareness in the Dumaguete area. I do realize this happens everywhere in the world and is not limited to Negros Oriental.
