Hello Glenda, just to go online you can use a 1kw small generator that runs outside with an extension cord. I used to see these “portable” generators at Handyman and ACE at City Mall. I think I may have seen them at Citi Hardware.

Citi hardware and ACE also have intermediate models in the 2.5kw range.

If you wish to power the whole house with an AIRCON or two, you will need a 5-10 Kw generator. I purchased mine at Polaris but have seen them at UyMatio too.

The higher power ones (usually with electric start) are the generators we have been discussing. They are in the 50-100k price range.

My suggestions: Buy a generator made by a Japanese manufacturer, especially if it is manual pull-start. My 2.5 kw Honda gen in Siquijor starts on the first pull or maybe the second (after several years use). American and other country’s models usually require a lot more effort to start after a while.

Or, at least have a Japanese-made engine like the Philippine made Promates at Polaris. Those are very good higher power generators and Polaris backs their warranty.

Change the oil regularly, use synthetic auto oil (the difference is amazing in my experience).

Never try to energize the house by plugging a portable generator into a household receptacle; that can put the 220 Volts onto the outside power lines and endanger utility workers. That could be done safely but most people do not know (or may forget) to shut-off the main power before doing that. The transfer switch we were talking about for larger generators prevents that.

If all you want to do is power a PC and a router for internet, you only need a small generator but in that case you need an extension cord to run it from outside to inside the house.

For any generator make sure it is well ventilated outside so the exhaust fumes do not get into the house.

Very important! The exhaust fumes are deadly.

Gasoline is dangerous and must be handled carefully as well. A spark can set it off while refilling. There are less volatile diesel versions with electric start but those are mostly the larger models.

Well the Philippines does have a president that heavily promotes and glorifies the use of violence to achieve goals and resolve problems. Did his supporters really think that only they would be allowed to use such tactics?

Thank you so much for your offer.
    Here is the latest in my nightmare;

The work done in Manila the day before got me well enough to fly. By then we were completely out of cash and a maxed out Visa card. My brothers chipped in and we were able to get a ticket to San Francisco Once we got to Sea-Tack, Alaska Air called an ambulance and we were in the VA ER. The VA did another catheterization and did some busting up of some of the blockages. That is two catheterization in three days. The third catheterization in 3 weeks and I was beginning to fear the word catheterization. Almost three days in ICU and discharged yesterday afternoon. Im still weak and shaky but glad to be out of the hospital.[IMG] Im looking at 3 or 4 weeks of cardiac rehab. Now working on a place to stay during that rehab. [IMG]

I have to say that Dumaguete has always been safe for me as well as all other parts of Philippines I have visited. I have a fairly good sense for danger and would strongly agree that US cities are far more likely to be dangerous than any place I have been on the Philippines so far. I have had a few incidents but all ended fairly quickly once each side could listen to the other. Filipinos by nature are far less violent than Americans I do not think that most of them want to fight with giant foreigners. I do my best to make friends and not enemies but their are some who truly hate Americans or white people or whatever. Such is life....people have a right to make choices good or bad!
Now as far as being a pedestrian.....that can be a bit scary until you get in rhythm with the locals who cross the street ! Dumaguete is easy compared to Manila dodge and weave  I do recall the first few visits I was almost clipped a few times but once I realized pedestrians didn't have the right away, the odds of getting smushed decreased exponentially . Also keep in mind the bigger vehicles are the bullies such as the Ceres liners ! If riding a motorcycle....you have to make your own safe path.

    I don't know.
Thanks John, Dutchie is correct (he usually is on most things? Smart Basket that he is) in just about everything he has to say on this issue of mine, but at this time I must return home, that is 5 weeks I have been in my newly built house and for me there is much to admire about it, although it cost me more than I ever thought it would I think the end result is good and I am fairly pleased with it at the end of the day, it has turned out well considering I was never in the building trade and this has been a first for me. Overall I am fairly contented with the life I have here in the Philippines, my young son of 4yrs is a joy to be with although building the house has kept us apart much more than I wanted, I was on site 7 days a week from dawn till dusk, leaving this bundle of joy will be difficult for me we are together that much more now we have all moved into the new house, he has so much fun here and room to run around, unlike his older half brother he enjoys helping out and even asks for jobs to do.

My hoose in Scotland is also a place I have enjoyed living in since I moved there in 1999, 4 yrs ago I was back in UK for a time thinking to get this ready to put on the market, sell up realise my assets and return to the Philippines to build a big Hoose and live happily ever after, so with this in mind I renovated the kitchen painted it inside and and outside and had it all looking spick and span, then one sunny morning I woke up and smelled the flowers, I decided then I'm never going to let that house go, to this day I think this decision was right for me, I need to return home to Scotland (I do sometimes miss the place) the house there will need some maintenance. Although it may seem less expensive for me to live here rather than me living in Scotland and still having to support the family here, I think I will be no worse off financially, I know my way around the kitchen and actually enjoy cooking for myself, on the rare occasions I do eat out I just go to Wetherspoons and eat their special which includes a free Beer, anyway the house in UK is an investment that I need to keep and maintain as an asset to the family here when I am gone, that more than anything else is so very important to me, what good would a big house be here in PI to my family when I am gone without any further financial input from me?

Of course I will come back here to PI from time to time but likely it will only be for short term visits?

    Cheers

    Daved

When i was still working my wife and i did a lot of travelling due to the requirements of my job (she was in her late 30's early 40's)
On exiting the Philippines she was constantly hassled at immigration for one reason or another that the officer would never clarify to me when i questioned them about the supposed "problem"
After thinking why this was happening it came to me that it always happened when the officer was female and never any problem with a male, this led me to believe jealousy was the cause, not because my wife was with such a good looking guy as me but because she was escaping the place that they were trapped in.
Since then even though it meant standing in the longest queue at immigration we always picked a counter with a male officer.
    Problem solved.

Advice was given by another (more qualified on psychological aspects) member to stick to whatever routines are possible. I assume this is because change can cause anxieties and so the less changes you have, the better. Also, keeping healthy by exercise and good diet. Doing hobbies can help distract from worrying thoughts.

Also, in regards to the variant, it is probably as likely to be subject to the same personal health protocols as the lesser variant - that is, to wear a mask always when with unknowns, to wash hands before eating, touching face or eyes. I also can see a point in using a face shield over a mask as it protects against saliva hitting your own mask - that saliva may contain virus particles which could then be drawn through the mask during breathing. This is being very cautious and is worthwhile if the worry of infection is high in a person's mind. Most islands in the country are relatively safe - better than being in many other countries - and combined with good sense, it is very unlikely you would catch the virus here.

P.S. I used the word "probably" as I cannot be certain, of course, other than my knowledge of viruses and their spread. I don't know how this new variant might change again - no one does. Keep the 'castle walls' intact and we should all be okay.

Anyone with debilitating depression should always seek professional help.

    Happier New Year.

Talked to them the other day, As of now you have to go to Cebu only for Biometrics but they are in the process of trying to convince Cebu to use the Biometrics on file for your ACR card. She told me that they would contact me when this is accomplished hopefully this year.
