Just returned from our 3 day experience at Silliman Medical and thought I would share my observations with those of you who are interested. Just to add that Jonie underwent a Cesarean birth so this will reflect in the stress, and costs noted here. I would also add that this was the first baby for both of us as I spent my life pursuing other opportunities and having a child simply did not fit in my plans... So we both were novices but had the support of her mother and our Ya Ya who I must add is a godsend... I will list my Pros and Cons as I see them so be advised these are just my observations...

    Pros
    1. Support staff on the OB second floor to include the Nurses, and duty Physicians were nothing short of excellent. Friendly, supportive at all times which was a blessing as I can be a handful when it comes to supporting those I love.. 5 stars !!

    2. Room is large enough for patient and 1 support person to sleep over, and can handle several guests at a time without being crowded. TV is modern and cable is good for those who wish to watch. The CR is large with heated shower. Split Air Con is very good and it is easy to chill the room to anyone's preference.

    3. Food is hospital food so enough said, there is a coffee shop on the second floor with good coffee and all day breakfast. I did not go to the cafeteria so cannot comment but there is a 7-11 across the street with most anything you might have forgotten in the rush to the hospital

    Cons
    1. Bring your own toilet tissue, wipes, soap, pillows, blankets and extra chairs as is only one chair in the room and comfort is not its high point.
    2. The building is undergoing renovations so there is some noise during the day and there is only one elevator working when we were there so be prepared for some delay when using.
    3. Parking is non existent so arrange to be dropped off but we had our car so I parked a block away and was able to find parking in front after 6 pm... results vary so if you are lucky enough to snag a spot then plan to stay until you check out.

My costs for the 3 day stay which included a private room, operating room, doctors fee, labs and pharmacy totaled 108,270.86. I was fortunate to snag 3 years of Phil Health for 7500 before costs went up and they paid 19000 so total was 89,000 plus.
I consider this worth every peso..

I did up a list a whiles back for personal use, still working on it and adding as I find new places locally, but will share it here, maybe you can contact some of them and enquire regards services you need.

I have also added Phone Numbers, Street Addresses, Online Web links etc whatever they had listed. (No doubt much of the online/phone number info is now no good but you never know)

Maybe others can add their preferred Mechanic/ Tyre Dealer/ Service Center/ Upholsterer/ Auto Electrician/ Panel Shop/ Paint Shop/ Bike Shop etc to let others know what is available locally, also give experiences with any listed or not listed so that others will know who they can trust and who to avoid...

Hello to everyone on the forum. I’ve been coming to Dumaguete every 12 to 18 months since meeting my wife in England in 1993 but finally made the jump and moved here in Dec 2016 (living out Sibulan/Ajong way). Been visiting the forum for a couple of months (yeah lurking I know!) but needed to say what a mine of information it’s been and how it’s proven invaluable for a couple of issues we’ve had since arriving, I served for 22 years in the RAF and then “worked” for the US Navy for 12 years when they had a presence in and around London (COMNAVACTUK), Hopefully I’ll be able to contribute in some small way in the future and I’m sure I’ll be making use of everybody’s knowledge here again

i have visited bayawan several times now and every time I visit I find something new to see.
Had to got meet a friend there today and try and find some fish which is difficult to find here, the fish market was very clean along with the rest of it and everything labled with a price.
What I was impressed with is most of the tricycles are now electric and very smal and this was in bayawan and sta catalina. Maybe the local government have some sort of deal for them to change, they were pretty fast also, the bikes were racal and a single seat li,e a push bike and the frame of the seating part was tube steel.
Ate lunch at pepe's on the boulevard which is always good food with aircon and fast service even though lightening struck a transformer just down the road whilst we were there.
Plenty of places to see there inc caves, waterfalls and several Spring pools which you can swim in.
Met with several foreigners who pretty much live off grid in the mountains and stay well away from all the bullshit down below, surprised me how many live up that way. Maybe a upcoming place for foreigners in the near future as way too busy and way too much crap down this way now.

Decided today I would try the mountain road from Valencia to Pamplona, stunning views and at the high point of 1,250m it was pretty cool! So here's a few pics of the trip.
Luckily enough the road had been graded up to the highest point so was a good drive but the road from there to Pamplona was not too good and it went on for ever and ever.
Met up with some locals who spend a week at a time looking after one of the 25 seizemometers which were placed at different sites around the mountains and have been up there for around a year now,one of the edc engineers comes and changes the sd card every week.
I have always know there was a road up this way and would never even try in the rainy season,we even had to straddle some of the dry ruts in the dried up mud as were so deep. I may venture up to the highest point again but no way all the way to Pamplona.

Took my wife's Kia Picanto in today for it's one year service. Took forever to tell us what items would need to be changed and how much it would cost. My wife now queries everything that is billed to us, she looked at the bill and asked what each item was. When she got to the 4th item, she was told that this was the technicians gloves and cloth ( 250 peso ) and were genuine Kia items. I said what the f##k, do we have to pay for soap to wash his hands. My wife quickly told him to remove the item and that it was like hospitals here, where you are even charged for the toilet roll. The moral of this story is, always check everything you are billed for, as someone will always try to make a little extra on the side.

 I am not a Great Shopper and when it all gets rushed I like it less but a Funny ( well peculiar really) thing Happened on Saturday Evening.( this was at Hypermart)
Azon had taken the Wrong Handbag. We were Standing at the checkout and she was As usual talking to a friend and the Girl zapped the articles and the Boy was packing. Then Horror, she has no Purse.
So it is Jack, Card Please. UH! UH! babe I gave it back to you this Morning when you went Polaris Remember? OH! Yeah I forgot. ( I had Borrowed my own card to buy her something as a surprise)
So standing there with about 350 peso in my Pocket and Little in my Wallet Ashamed and Embarrassed is not the Word.

So Having all the Goods now gone through the Till we got a problem. The Girls said I will have to call the Supervisor to clear the Till so we can put the Stuff back.
OK Up comes the Floor manager who as per chance is a quite close neighbour of ours and after a Chat with her and Azon ( about what I am not sure because nothing was Happening on the Till and the Queue was getting edgy. OK so another manager type appears with a pad. Sir? yes? Do you have your pass port? NO? why? well what I/D do you have. only my ACR card I say OK that's good as it has your Address on it. I asked what is going on? Well sir the Director asked if you were known to us and was told OH Yes! they are Regular Customers and known Personally by xxxxxxxx [ the other Supervisor] OK all done I sign for the 2.490 shopping and they Keep my Card ( which I got back when we Paid the account Yesterday) So off we go home with the Shopping to many Stares on the way Out. No Receipt of course but our copy of the debit slip. [ You know how the Guards like to Tick things.]

OK Folks, reason I am telling this although it is a little Embarrassing, is to illustrate that we, as Foreigners can get Help if really needed by Local Business. ( Being a Model Foreigner helps as well) Whilst sometimes we hear reports of the ACR card being useless here is an example of the need to have one. and Carry it.
Of course, some would say don't let her have the ATM card at all then you will know where it is but That's they way we are. My card and I just Borrow when I need to. Usually it all works well. Every one has Hiccup days This was ours and it all turned out Good.

    Jack

Please ignore if you have no interest in this.

I have been providing post stroke update every 3 months to assist others who might be going through this. If it also serves as a heads up to those with high blood pressure or high cholesterol levels than good.

It has now been 2 years since I had a pretty nasty stroke. There is some pretty good progress. Maintaining my positive attitude, my current status is as follows. If I have someone walking next to me in case I sway to the right, I can walk about 45 minutes on my own. I need help to get up or sit down and I need help and a cane to go up or down steps, and I need my wife to shower and shave me while I sit in a chair. My balance is not very good and my right leg and arm have about 50% paralysis so I can not use my right hand to eat, drink or write. However, I am able to do light weights and machines at the gym so my right hand grip has improved, my brother-in-law helps me navigate the gym and he is my driver. My voice is maybe 75% normal. My good arm and leg are numb while my right arm and leg have constant tingling and feel very heavy. My face has regained most of its shape but the right side is numb, and unfortunately my double chin has returned.
Truthfully, I thought I would have my balance after 2 years but I do have control of my body movements and functions. The doctor says I should expect only a 70% recovery. I don't accept that and will keep working toward a full recovery.

If you would like more information PM me.
