I fully understand where you are coming from - you want assurances before you change your 'comfort zone' to another place. But life does not work like that - you might as well ask people here what YOU should choose from the menu when at a restaurant. You are an individual and, as such, will have different worries and different coping methods. Best to just flow in the river that you find when you get there - if medical emergencies arise then decide at that time how best to deal with them and, depending on your ability to travel due to the illness, where to get treated. If you feel you want to stay forever then do so (but I know of someone who was certain in his mind to stay in the Philippines forever but after 30 years went back to the USA for the benefit of his Filipino family who all wanted to live there) but if, after any period of time, you decide you prefer the US then go back. Life is a risk from the moment of conception and it is best when we don't plot our future too much - far too many unknowns for that. Instead look at it as now having many choices - they are yours for the picking, depending on how YOU feel, not how anyone else feels about living in Dumaguete or the Philippines.

I know all about this - your thinking is identical to mine before I moved to the Philippines. I found many things I had feared turned out to be just fine. Like many people, my only regret is not moving sooner.

I'm sure the occupancy rate and lack of customers will eventually impact the job security of the current manager. If this happens before the mall falls into an even greater state of disrepair and desolation and cannot be salvaged under its current franchise name is yet to be seen. I've seen some pretty desolate malls in the Philippines lose their franchise and then be turned into more of a local market style setup or be taken over by another large mall franchise and brought back to life.

If only it were the case that all of us were suited to driving motorcycles ... unfortunately not an option for many, so your statement is not a counter argument that reflects reality. I am glad to see all of those motorcycles, if even a fourth of them were cars the situation would be impossible. But the motorcycle drivers need to recognize that they have lots of parking options available and so please don't take away the extremely limited options the cars have. Just today I saw a motorcycle parked sideways in a car parking area taking up two car parking places when there was a motorcycle parking area available.

I have been tracking this subject since 2008. Nothing has been passed, at this time, to allow sr citizen foreigners to have the sr citizen discount card. In fact there is a potential serious penalty if you are caught using one. A friend tried at Dauin, another tried at Dumaguete recently, and I recently tried at Bacong. We were all turned down - doesn’t matter if you are a permanent resident. I know some guys who have and used the card. Personally, I have too much to lose to obtain and use one.
I doubt the current government will ever amend the law.

Seems like a grooming project of these 3 idiots. Luckily they only had the girls for 5 days before getting busted.

"With"? As in they were drinking together? Yeah, they were. These three sound like real scum. Hopefully they were caught before they were able to take advantage of the children (sounds like they caught them just before they were getting ready to). I would normally say to give them the death sentence...but a Filipino jail is much more fitting punishment.

@ChMacQueen See, it isn't just foreigners getting charged with these crimes. I do think the parents should also be charged with a crime as well. It seems their greed allowed them to pimp out their daughters. Parents have a legal and moral obligation to protect their children from scum like this...and they failed miserably at doing so.

Best fancy dining I have found is El Dorado in Dauin. I was impressed by the good selections at El Dorado. It is typical resort food but the prices are quite good and the selections are great. 7 people were stuffed for about 4,000 pesos and that's with appetizers, a couple drinks each, main courses and dessert. Entrance fee is 200 but it is all consumable. Its pretty fancy at that price.

Totally disagree. Had one in the house I rented while Typhoon Yolanda was passing overhead (not in Dumaguete though so maybe not needed here). When a Super Typhoon is passing overhead It is very comforting to have a safe room. It was located in the middle of the house with no windows and no doors leading to the exterior of the building. Two solid core doors and the rest all concrete. If someone tries to bust through door number one you can escape out door number two so unless there is a gang who know the layout of the house and the escape routes you would be very safe in that safe room. Access from either the living room or the bedroom, in fact you had to pass through the safe room to get to the master bedroom. Very well thought out and cost next to nothing to add into the house provided it is designed right.

Maybe not, but it is what I consider smell-medium sized house and lot in the Philippines to be actually worth. There have been houses and lots posted on this forum at that price. The long nose priced property bubble in the Philippines is going to burst. When I can buy beachfront property in Hawaii or most of the Caribean cheaper than I can in the Dumaguete area something is very wrong.

If you have to get a new battery, I would recommend without hesitation the Goodyear place across from the Ceres terminal.
Several years ago they installed a new battery in my car. When they checked out the new install they determined the real problem was my fanbelt. They tightened the fanbelt, reinstalled the old battery, refunded my money and sent me on my way. No charge.
When I need tires etc that's where I go. Some places here do know how to get business.

Not meeting this punk at all was the only reasonable thing Obama could do. Lecturing him won't work, it's a hopeless case in this age anyway.

This megalomaniac is working really hard to move international perception of the Philippines somewhere in between Venezuala and El Salvador. But yeah, of course he doesn't care, and why should he, after all economy is booming and doesn't need outside investment at all. Poverty doesn't exist, infrastructure is great, and the next super typhoon won't cause a major humanitarian catastrophe because the Phils are so well prepared. LOL this country really deserved better.
