Good day PatO! And Semper Fi....I've been following your life in Dumaguete since you were a newbie....I read your adventures settling in..learned heaps about life in Dumagete/Negros..and kept with it thru your health issue....Pure respect mate....Not just for your own personal challenges....But your candid posts.....across - what is it?...A decade or maybe more...? I have been following this and other forums ( but this is my favourite by far)....And it is looking like we will be making the move to Bacolod fairly soon....I had some health issues myself but with the right treatments and doctors....It is looking up....I feel much better and my wife is of course eager to return to her homeland - originally from La Carlota. I think I have a decade or two in me to enjoy the amazing large lot we have in a secure Talisay subdivision....which would be wonderful...but also enable us to explore, Negros, the Philippines, and the world....courtesy of only being 3km from the 'new' Bacolod Airport. Bloody oath I will visit....You have been a stalwart, level-headed contributor and I salute you for not being too enthralled - but giving very honest and informative posts. Cheers....and Semper Fi......
Hang in their mate....I am looking forward to knocking on your front door and teaching you how to drink beer.....

My opinion on when dead bodies should be shown....it's complicated. I think it should always be a last resort and be beneficial to educating someone on an individual basis. Example: my GF is hard headed about wearing a helmet (no pun intended). I can talk until I'm blue in the face and she will resist....but if I start forcing pictures or videos of people having accidents and getting horrible mutilated/disfigured/killed (preferably with the accident being no fault of their own because she thinks she's a good driver and accidents can only happen if she is at fault ) on her then she starts to come around....at least for a week or two. That doesn't mean I agree with the common 3rd world practice of posting that crap on social media, I don't, but those images can serve a valid purpose. There are websites out there that claim to serve this specific purpose, though I'm not sure I believe the owners are operating those sites for the reasons claimed. (Mainly because they have absolutely zero concern about getting consent from any involved person' in the images.)
A bit off topic now.-

Update, Just returned from Bacolod today. Felt a little adventurous so took the Don Salvador Benedicto, San Carlos route. Once you enter Negros Oriental the norm is massive road construction, drainage work until you reach Bindoy. It is terrible, frequent stops because only one way, and when you get to go a complete mud bath for your auto or whatever conveyance you use. When you are not in a construction area you are going over areas that are being readied for construction once they finish the one they are working on. Take the Mabinay route if at all possible. Me? If for some reason the Bais to Mabinay or Mabinay to Kabankalan was closed, I would drive south through Bayawan and then up versus going up to San Carlos, even thought it adds an extra 1 to 2 hours of travel time. I might give it another try in a year, but not before.

$860 should allow a person to scrape by until the first time life happens and a big expense comes around (hospital, accident, legal trouble)....then you can turn into the average sack of sh*t expat who borrows money and never pays it back. Coming on such a limited budget with no ability to make more money is stupid and completely irresponsible. I suspect you are about 60-70% disabled...don't sit around being a bum, get a job with the government or a contracting company and build yourself an actual legitimate retirement you can live off of.-

- Thread: Circumnavigating Negros by bus
but as far as your question goes, i've been driving here for about 7 years, both 2 wheeled and 4 wheeled vehicles and i hardly know what's along the road cuz i keep my eyes on the road so i don't squish someone who trusts in god. so, if i was to make your island exploration trip, i'd take ceres so i could look out the window. likewise, i learn alot about businesses and business locations when i take a tryke in duma.-

- Thread: So whats the verdict?

I have already been in touch with a techie who says it IS available in my subdivision. I have received an email and text message to say "application pending" and they will get back to me within 24 hours.
More than that I cannot say, but I thought the deal looked good enough to give it a try and a 300 GB cap is more than I am going to use so no big deal. The unlimited 50 Mbps plan is an additional 1,000 pesos a month and I don't see the value in it for a normal household.
But I will have a better idea when and if it gets installed and working.-

- Thread: Finding a Helper
P3000 is too much. Depending on where you live it would be either P1500 or P2000 (Valencia would be P1500, Dumaguete P2000). If you are in the NCR the minimum salary is P2500. 13 month pay is a requirement.
I wouldn't start any helper with more than the minimum. Most are extremely tapolan and will be fired in short order. If they do a good job I would quickly give them a raise.

- Thread: Parking
The road was good with a few minor construction areas. My car rides low and it did not scrap on anything. There are a few potholes big enough to cook a chicken in but they are easily avoided.
There is a pay parking lot with security at the ferry terminal. As soon as you enter the main gate of the port and pay the 10 or 20 pesos fee, turn right and the security shack is about 30 meters along on the right.
If the lot is full just wait for a while. Hopefully when the next ferry arrives a parking spot might become available. If you have to wait for a spot just block the gate and follow whoever is retrieving their car to their parking spot. If you don't block the gate you could end up second in line.
COST about 30 pesos per day.-
