PhilHealth is good to have, but let me offer a bit of first-hand advice.....If you go into the hospital, do NOT leave until you are well!! Because if you return in a few days time, they will not pay again for the same issue. My husband went into the hospital with pneumonia for a couple of days, decided he wanted to go home (against everyone's wishes). PhilHealth paid that bill (100% to my recollection), about 10,000php. He voluntarily went back, not improved, 2 days later. He ended up in ICU on a ventilator (2 weeks), and ultimately passed. This bill was 100's of 1000's php, and PhilHealth denied every bit of it since he went back before the required wait time between incidents. Read their rules and understand them. But, again, it is good to have in case of hospitalization.

I do not do any of the dealing here mate, all is done by my Wife or the Family. I have learnt to stay away from any place with a point of sale due to how wildly the price fluctuates, in fact it was my Wife who insisted I stay at home when she goes across the to the markets because everything went up crazy in price as soon as it was known she was married to a foreigner. I do not pretend to understand it, I live with the Family here under the one roof, 8 Adults and 7 kids as well as myself in a Filipino Nipa House, I live eat and breathe the same as they do, side by side. No running water, no Air-con, hand pump from the Well and hand wash our Clothes as well as shower from a Pail and a pitcher for the CR. A simple life, which I dearly love and would never give up to go back to the West again, ever. As for Tips, I do generously tip those who do anything for me as well as pay for anything done for me, it is little to me but a big help to them, so at times if I must create something for them to do when they are in need, then I do, it is not a hand out as they are too proud to accept a hand out. Doing something for something is a matter of pride and something I understand as I have never in my life been in a position of wealth myself, until I came here to be surrounded by my new Family. You can find no better wealth than Family or a true friend, both of which is in abundance here. That is what I love about the Philippines.-

My gf's brother has been going on and on about a new cousin they have come into contact with in Dumaguete. It seems this cousin is married to an American who served in the military (long ago judging from the pictures I have been shown) and for some reason I should be mystified and/or extremely interested in this young lady and her husband. I guess....not sure why he keeps talking about this couple and showing me pictures of people I have never met before in my life. I've been trying to blow it off and not show the slightest bit of interest in the cousin or the expat.
However, today I was informed that I am invited to dinner this afternoon by this couple through my gf's brother (and confirmed by my gf). I have absolutely no interest in going to someone's house, expat or not, who did not personally invite me. At first I asked my gf "what do they want from me? And why are they so interested in spending time with you, your brother and me?" as I find the entire situation very "convenient" (why did this "cousin" all of a sudden show up out of nowhere, that nobody knew was related to the gf's family in the first place, and take such an interest to the gf's brother, my gf.....and now has an interest in meeting me?
). I've been trying to come up with a reason other than "I don't want to" all day. Your post just gave me that reason. It might not be that they have bad motives...but the guy just doesn't really know about it or really want me to come either since the invitation was not extended directly to me by the people supposedly hosting dinner. And personally I feel much more comfortable meeting people for the first time on neutral ground somewhere public mainly because I feel awkward in these types of situations and alcohol helps me deal with that discomfort.

i just turned 78 and started wearing my helmet while bicycling about one year ago. this after reading that one of the major life changes for the elderly is head injury!! prior to that i spent my entire life avoiding helmets. things change. perception changes as long as you accept the consequences (including the financial ones) ride on and enjoy!! everything you do in life has associated risks-

Diving without a horn in the Philippines is almost suicidal. I use mine all the time and won't ride that bike/vehicle if it isn't working. Quick double horn tap is almost universally used in the Philippines to mean, "I'm coming up on you, don't do something stupid."
3 or more quick honks usually means, "I'm driving fast and in a hurry. Don't do something stupid."
A long horn honk either means, "f*ck you" or, "prepare for a collision".
Horn honks are a courtesy to dumdums with p*ss poor driving skills. It lets these idiots know someone is coming up on them.-

While I partially agree with what you state.
The 65,000 baht must be deposited into a Thai bank account every month for 12 months in order to be eligible for an extension. The days of getting a letter from the embassy are long over. The deposits must show proof of being a foreign transaction. That is to prevent anyone from withdrawing money from the ATM and depositing it into their account. Also, no buddy systems. (two people transferring funds on each other's behalf to meet eligibility)
Comparing Manila Air Quality to Bangkok is kind of a stretch. But, if you look at an Air Quality Map of Thailand you will see that almost 80% of it is below standards. Standards in the north are actually rated as dangerous by the World Health Organization.
As far a food goes. The best Thai food I have ever had was in a Thai Restaraunt in the states. Having lived in Thailand off and on since 1972, I have never figured out why people say the food is so good. Most of it isn't as far as I'm concerned. But to each his own.
I totally agree with you as far as the internet goes. Thailand has great internet if you are willing to pay for it. The low-cost internet is probably no better than the Philippines. The internet in Thailand doesn't go out that often, but the power does. So, hey............................ I lived in the Philippines before. Really enjoyed it. But, at the time I thought Thailand was the better option and for a while I was right. But, since the coup and the government takeover and the ridiculous immigration rules I no longer feel that way. They are pretty much showing they no longer need or want expats.-

If you go here ( Mapcentral - Philippine Map Online ) and zoom out, then work your way down the Map to Negros, you can then zoom right in and can see all of the Barangay Outlines for Negros Oriental as well as all other Islands in the Philippines;
