Just returned from our 3 day experience at Silliman Medical and thought I would share my observations with those of you who are interested. Just to add that Jonie underwent a Cesarean birth so this will reflect in the stress, and costs noted here. I would also add that this was the first baby for both of us as I spent my life pursuing other opportunities and having a child simply did not fit in my plans... So we both were novices but had the support of her mother and our Ya Ya who I must add is a godsend... I will list my Pros and Cons as I see them so be advised these are just my observations...

    Pros
    1. Support staff on the OB second floor to include the Nurses, and duty Physicians were nothing short of excellent. Friendly, supportive at all times which was a blessing as I can be a handful when it comes to supporting those I love.. 5 stars !!

    2. Room is large enough for patient and 1 support person to sleep over, and can handle several guests at a time without being crowded. TV is modern and cable is good for those who wish to watch. The CR is large with heated shower. Split Air Con is very good and it is easy to chill the room to anyone's preference.

    3. Food is hospital food so enough said, there is a coffee shop on the second floor with good coffee and all day breakfast. I did not go to the cafeteria so cannot comment but there is a 7-11 across the street with most anything you might have forgotten in the rush to the hospital

    Cons
    1. Bring your own toilet tissue, wipes, soap, pillows, blankets and extra chairs as is only one chair in the room and comfort is not its high point.
    2. The building is undergoing renovations so there is some noise during the day and there is only one elevator working when we were there so be prepared for some delay when using.
    3. Parking is non existent so arrange to be dropped off but we had our car so I parked a block away and was able to find parking in front after 6 pm... results vary so if you are lucky enough to snag a spot then plan to stay until you check out.

My costs for the 3 day stay which included a private room, operating room, doctors fee, labs and pharmacy totaled 108,270.86. I was fortunate to snag 3 years of Phil Health for 7500 before costs went up and they paid 19000 so total was 89,000 plus.
I consider this worth every peso..

I did up a list a whiles back for personal use, still working on it and adding as I find new places locally, but will share it here, maybe you can contact some of them and enquire regards services you need.

I have also added Phone Numbers, Street Addresses, Online Web links etc whatever they had listed. (No doubt much of the online/phone number info is now no good but you never know)

Maybe others can add their preferred Mechanic/ Tyre Dealer/ Service Center/ Upholsterer/ Auto Electrician/ Panel Shop/ Paint Shop/ Bike Shop etc to let others know what is available locally, also give experiences with any listed or not listed so that others will know who they can trust and who to avoid...

Thank you to all of our customers and friends that have been supporting our efforts.
We just completed the process for our building permit for a restaurant in Valencia. It will be on Legarda right at the corner of West Balugo Road. That is 1.2 km north of the main Valencia Dumaguete highway on Legarda St. If you are on the main highway going toward Dumaguete from the Valencia Market, turn left at the road just past Neva's and go 1.2 km. The road on the left at that point is West Balugo. We will be on the far corner.
It will probably take a couple of months, maybe a little more. It will only be a small place but will give us the space to be able to serve our friends and customers better and serve all our regular foods as hot meals. We have a few more standards of ours to add to the menu also, such as country fried steak, smoked pork shoulder bbq, fried chicken, etc., etc. Nothing fancy, just good quality simple food.
It is called "Joy Bamboo Cafe".
Here is a drawing of what the place will look like. Not exact, just an artists rendering. It's shady there so once we get open we will probably be adding a couple places to sit in the yard too.

There is a recent addition to the dentists in town. Dr. Julie Flor Cordeta, Premier Dental Care Solution. I read about her on the forum and decided to see her since I had a tooth ache that keep me up occasionally. She is located across from the Phoenix gas station south of the mall. I do not make many recommendations on the forum but I would recommend her, after three visits and being very comfortable with her performance:

First appointment was a meet and greet with a review of my dental situation and recommendations with costs: no charge

Second appointment was to clean and fill a cavity, in my mouth: 500 P cleaning, 500 P for cavity. (No more tooth pain).

Third appointment visit was for second cavity and root canal: This one was more interesting as after starting the cavity repair, after taking an x-ray, said she may not have to do the root canal if the cavity did not get too close to the nerve... The cavity was 500 P inclusive of x-ray, and the root canal was 4500 P but she did not have to do the root canal. I walked out with no pain in my mouth or wallet.

I have been impressed by her thorough explanations of procedures and pleasant “chair side” manner. I have no more tooth ache. My mouth feels good, there was very little pain during the processes, and I still have pesos in my pocket for a couple of good meals.

Since she is new, so is her office, and very modern looking to a layman like myself. I was impressed again with a device she put in my mouth that was a camera and an image of what she was going to do, the cavities were displayed on a TV monitor on the wall in front of me, as well as the mentioned x-ray and an explanation of services. I am confident in the services I received from her.

Note: this is the fourth dentist I have used in town: First charged me extremely high skin tax but was recommended by my Filipino Landlord. Second: tried a switch and bait scheme on me. Third: lost my records after charging me for a preliminary exam. Four did a bridge, he has moved and the bridge does not always feel right. Dr. Julie Flor Cordeta is the only one I have confidence in at this time. Contact number is 09175280792. Or premierdcs@gmail.com or premierdent.net.

    O.K., my
generator is fixed now. They picked it up at the house last Thursday afternoon and was delivered back today about 2:00 p.m.. The owner himself came to the house to look at it Thursday to determine the problem. A half hour later his boys came with the truck to pick it up. Friday he had us come to his shop to see what they found bad in the alternator. So we told him to go ahead with the fix which would require a rewind. The boys brought it back today, I tested it under load and all is well. Total cost from him P6500. I consider that quite fair.
The company is Marlet Electrical and Rewinding Shop. Mario P. Sorila. He's on what I call the BIR road in Bagacay not too far from the Dumaguete Valencia road. (035) 421-0371 or 0916-458-8803.
All types AC DC motor & generator repair and other electrical related issues.
He doesn't do engine repair, but anything electrical in generators is his specialty.

After seeing several pups and their parents today I decided against a German Shepard. Several King Shepards in the area and those are just too big (fine for me but got a "wtf!?" when my gf saw the mother and I explained the father was even bigger, I want her to be comfortable with the full grown version and not just the cute puppy size) and shed far too much for keeping in the house, with additional hip/joint issues down the road.

I found some regular German Shepherd pups with a mom that had a very sweet, labrador level, temperament. However, even with the mom being freshly bathed and obviously taken care of the shedding was too much for me.

I decided against the Belgian Malinois since my gf has little experience with aggressive/high maintenance/high energy working dogs. I figured I would go with something a bit more manageable for her and, more importantly, my sanity.

After some research I decided to go with a husky. Shedding still an issue but it seems this breed does so seasonally...or maybe not since the season doesn't really change much here. I guess I'll find out. I was also concerned with the heat here being a bit much for the breed but it appears they adapt to warmer climates and have little issue as long as you take some basic precautions.

It has only been half a day but I'm quite happy with this pup. It has a playful but gentle temperament and when the tv comes on it sits and watched quietly.

Went to renew my expired (by 4 years) DL yesterday. The guy at the "information" desk puts in absolutely zero effort to be informational. He said it was "your problem" that I didn't understand his responses or know the procedures and he didn't want to repeat himself. "Medical", "copy","no need" were the only words he said to me, though he told my gf he explained very clearly everything I needed to do...but then got an attitude with her when she couldn't follow what he was saying.

So here is the procedure at the Dumaguete main LTO branch...at least for someone that has previously had a license here.

    1. Don't go in to the LTO, proceed to the end of the road past the prison to the medical center. Pay P400. No drug test, no eye exam, no blood pressure and no pulse required. Have picture taken. Receive medical clearance.

    2. Make photocopy or two of your old license next door to the medical exam. Should be less that P10.

    3. Take paperwork to worthless information guy. Fill out application form. Ignore anything worthless information guy says or any number he staples to your documents, it means absolutely nothing, there is no number system in the LTO. Ask guard what to do if confused. Best to give application form to guard and not the information guy.

    4. Wait.

    5. Pay P100 processing fee.

    6. Wait.

    7. Window 4 for picture and biometrics.

    8. Wait.

    9. Take test on computer. 60 questions, 60 minutes to complete. (I took 10 minutes and received a 51 out of 60. Pretty basic stuff.) Computer malfunctioned 4 times during my test. If the camera malfunctions just refresh the browser, control+v at log in, resume test.

    10. Wait.

    11. Go to window 4 again. The guy will take your fingerprints again for verification.

    12. Go to cashier and pay P810.

    13. Go to window 4 and receive license.

    14. GTFO of that sh*thole.

I might have got a few steps mixed up but the main point of the story is to not listen to a f'n thing "information guy" says.

Not sure whether anything much on Shopee has been posted in the past, but thought I would share my recent experiences in the hope that it might help other members with their shopping choices and to be prepared for what might happen when using Shopee.

Several weeks ago I bought a pc via Shopee. Arrived on time, did not power up. Went through the returns assessment process with Shopee and the seller, which involved lots of painstaking gathering of evidence - chats with the seller; pictures of the item; pictures of the packaging etc. Process for return via Shopee is to take to an accredited MLhuillier agent who arrange the return. Shopee sent an email saying I should use the attached return shipping label, but there was not one attached. Nonetheless, after spending 90+ minutes at an MLhuiller agent in town the shipping label was duly generated by the Shopee system, item returned and money transferred back to my account.

Recently purchased an inverter for brownouts, having seen an informative video by a well-known local blogger. The correct (best) spec of inverter recommended (pure sine wave), but there was due warning to make sure that the small print spec for the item matched the headline advert for this type. Browsing through both Shopee and Lazada, I was shocked to see how many inverters were headlined as pure sine wave, but in the spec noted as modified sine wave, which is not so good with certain types of appliance. False advertising all over the place. Eventually found one that matched the spec and at 5000w was what I was after. The price was good.

Obviously it was shipped from Chine, as they all are, so took a couple of weeks to arrive. On opening the box, I just removed the manual and sure enough, on page 4, it said that the item was a modified sine wave type. Straight back to Shopee to request return/refund - seller disputed, but Shopee eventually found in my favour.

So, off I went to MLhuiller to return the item, armed with all the details I needed. In all, I visited four different MLhuiller agents and I still have the item. These were the responses when I explained in each one what I wanted them to do:

    1. Sir, the item needs to have bubble wrap'. Me: 'But there was no bubble wrap in the box when I received it'. 'Sorry sir, but that's the policy, there must be bubble wrap'. Took back the item and went off to downtown to buy bubble wrap.

    2. After finally finding bubble wrap in Uymatiao, went to closest MLhuiller agent to return item. 'Sorry sir, brown out. We have no system access'. Not their fault.

    3. Set off with bubble wrap flapping in the wind and went to Market Place MLhuiller branch. Explained what I wanted them to do. After the two behind the counter chatted for a few minutes, I got 'Sorry sir, we have not had our Shopee agency account activated yet'. Me: 'But you appear on their list of accredited agents'. Sorry sir'!

    4. Set off just up the road to the next MLuiller agent before Robinson Mall. Explained what I wanted them to do. Gave them all the details that Shopee had sent me to facilitate the return. 'Sir, we need the purchase ID number'. Me: 'I think you just input the return ID number I've provided'. 'No sir, we need the purchase ID number'. Fortunately I was able to find that in the Shopee app on my phone and gave it to them. 'Sir, this is an invalid purchase ID number'. Me: 'But it's the number in my account'. 'But the number is showing as invalid sir'. Me: 'I don't have any other numbers. Can you please call Shopee to clarify?' 'Sir, we cannot do that'. Me: 'Why not, the last time I returned an item at a different branch, the agent called Shopee 11 times'. 'Sir, we need the puchase ID number from the seller to you'. Me: 'But there is no such number. The number comes from Shopee'. 'Sir, sorry but we cannot process it without that'.

Sorry if that's a bit long-winded, but I hope that it serves as a warning that if you buy from Shopee, you run a huge risk of being scammed for an unsuitable or inappropriate item, i.e. one that is NOT what you thought you were paying for.

That aside, providing that you take a video of yourself opening the package on arrival, take copious pictures just in case and gather as much evidence as you can, there is high probability of Shopee accepting the return from you. If not, who knows.

But, this is the exciting part, once you have Shopee's consent to return, you are then awaiting a return shipping label that will probably not arrive from them. Then, you are in the lap of the Gods as to whether your chosen MLhuiller agent will be bothered to do the return for you. Having seen the lengthy process on my first and successful return, I can quite hear the thought process churning around in the MLhuiller employees' heads - 'shall we spend a couple of hours going through this, or fob him off with some excuse or other as to why he should go somewhere else, so we can go back to our phones and something much more important (anyone else noticed that rife habit in shops, offices etc?).

Needless to say, Shopee is now off my shopping list. I'll try Lazada, as at least returns are via LBC, who should have more experience in logistics processes (we'll see!).

Hope that all helps some in their shopping choices, or at least warns of some of the potential pitfalls ahead.

Moderator - I could not find an appropriate thread heading for online shopping, but if there is one, feel free to move.

I had a doctor’s appt at the new Ace Hospital in Daro today. They opened up April 1, which should have been called a soft opening, given the internal finishing going on. Not many doctors moved there yet. Spacious waiting room and modern facilities (or will be when complete). Three floors including a surgical ward. My doctor said they can do an echocardiogram on my heart so maybe it will be high tech there.
