Sniff, sniff, sniff.............nope, sorry, I don't smell it everywhere I go. Of course, I don't hang out with substance abusers to smell them, or ask where they come from.

I've never been to angeles city or Thailand. Came here from the USA. Many of us live responsible lives here.

The stray dogs are a problem. It's not just a minority with diseases. At night after traffic has died down, dogs own the streets. When I would walk at night I had to be constantly on guard to keep from getting bit.

I don't listen to music while walking anymore. The third time I ever listened to music while walking, a dog got close enough to me that it was able to grab my pant leg. Good thing I was wearing loose pants or I would have got bit in the ankle. This was during the day.

Many people here are scared of dogs and won't walk anywhere because of dogs.

Kill the dogs. Even the non diseased dogs are a problem. They form packs and become more dangerous in numbers. While one dog might leave you alone, a group of dogs act differently.

The moral weight isn't on the people making the decision to kill the dogs, rather it's on the people not taking care of their own dogs and fixing them so they no longer breed.

I'd think that the chance of violence against you or your family is higher in many liberal cities in the US like NYC, San Fransisco, Los Angeles, Detroit, Chicago, and many others than in many places in the Philippines. Here if you keep a smart head to your shoulders, don't show off, don't screw around with someone's young underage daughter and dump her to the side, don't go flashing money and jewelry, and stay out of the more hazardous regions including Manila, Cebu, and Angeles you'd be much safer here other then driving.

Makes me wonder why some expats are so quick tempered. Filipinos are, by nature, slow people and those not used to this slowness usually lose their temper. You have to remind yourself that you are no longer in USA or wherever is your place of origin. Welcome to the Philippines!

I am not sure I sit comfortably with this type of comment - it can be said in another way (e.g. "So maybe have a chat with her about this") without labelling a member's child. None of us has ever learned everything, even at age 100, certainly not at age 19. There is always room for a caring parent (as from reading here I am sure Mr P is) to help guide a developing adult.

Having lived in Dumaguete 10 years ago for over two years, I can attest Dumaguete has always,(since at least 2006) been a potentially dangerous place. young drug influenced gangs roaming the streets at night, Bloods and Crips, kinda a joke compared to the real ones though. The fraternities are far more dangerous Akro etc. Then you have the drug related ongoing criminal activity which usually does not affect foreigners much, unless you get caught in the crossfire. On top of that there is a very active Muslim mafia here. They run and control many criminal activities and are tied in to the local police, NBI, and the PNP. They have connections in the south and have been known to import "operatives" to Dumagete to pull of a hit or a "job". Then the police, NBI, and ex military guys are running all kinds of games, and criminal activity. This is the largely invisible bad stuff to most foreigners , especially ones who live in Valencia in a safe compound commute to McDonalds for breakfast them scoot home again, with perhaps a weekly foray to the Bvd. for dinner.
just know your surroundings, travel at reasonable times of the day, change your daily/weekly route to the bank, and remember you are the foreigner here, always will be, and the guest of the Philippine people.

Interesting point. It does come down to the family / relationships needs and someone who could help but won't is a problem and this goes for men and women. Its not his responsibility to support her and its not her responsibility to support him but its their responsibility to support each other and whatever kids they have mutually.

Key point I see though is one needs to decide early what they want in a relationship as far as some basics and make that clear early on. If you want a GF who has all the time in the world for you then don't go chasing someone who's working especially a career thinking she will drop everything so she can sit at home to be at your beck and call. Also consider if you want a career minded gal who wants a real job and real career to look for someone working at that or someone with the drive for that and make it clear early on. There is nothing wrong with stating what you want and looking for someone who fits your needs and wants but don't expect them way down the road to change course for you.
