We've been spared the brownout for the time being due to a delay of transformer!

The difference is that those drunks/a-holes aren't recording their rants and putting it on YouTube. This Vandever guy is exercising his freedom of speech...unfortunately for him, with that comes repercussions (even more repercussions than he might find in the US). If you decide to have diarrhea of the mouth and put it on YouTube you should expect people to call you out on it.....or worse, like this Dennis guy did, start a blog about all the nasty crap you have done in your life (or possibly tick off the wrong local and then they use their connections to make your life very difficult). This guy has brought it on himself....just as a loud obnoxious drunk might find himself in a situation where he won't come out a winner in a bar. A-holes who don't understand that this is the third world and that things are dealt with here differently will probably not be welcome very long. On top of his very misguided words he has also allegedly broken some laws, not a good combination for him. The more known his actions/words/name become the more likely someone is going to step up and enforce some of those laws that he believes are never enforced. You can only tick off so many people in the Philippines before someone with some pull does something about you.

We use the slow cooker for a few meals, chop up the veg,fry the meat off in flour in the fry pan and throw it all in there with a casserole/stew mix and leave on high for 6-7 hrs.
Also they have a good chillie mix in hyper made by mc cormick, half kg of ground beef, one onion, small tin mushrooms, big tin of toms and a tin of kidney beans. Add chillie to your licking. Dinner this evening.

They probably "should" but they shouldn't be forced to. Also, some people aren't happy unless they are miserable....so it wouldn't matter where that type of person was living.

Mark, if you are going to buy 2 + hectares of land, you can consider checking out Bacong. Land is cheaper than most places and lots available up the hill. Going to Dumaguete from the south is arguably faster and less hassle than from the north. One of the downsides, however, is night time driving. Too many bikes and vehicles without lights.

I think the mall was built for the people of bayawan and look at the jobs it will create there!
Eventually foreigners will start to get fed up of dumaguete and the traffic and pollution and look at other areas. Bayawan has some good projects going on and still has the best boulavard around here even though it could do with a few more restos.

I'm sure the occupancy rate and lack of customers will eventually impact the job security of the current manager. If this happens before the mall falls into an even greater state of disrepair and desolation and cannot be salvaged under its current franchise name is yet to be seen. I've seen some pretty desolate malls in the Philippines lose their franchise and then be turned into more of a local market style setup or be taken over by another large mall franchise and brought back to life.

I have been tracking this subject since 2008. Nothing has been passed, at this time, to allow sr citizen foreigners to have the sr citizen discount card. In fact there is a potential serious penalty if you are caught using one. A friend tried at Dauin, another tried at Dumaguete recently, and I recently tried at Bacong. We were all turned down - doesn’t matter if you are a permanent resident. I know some guys who have and used the card. Personally, I have too much to lose to obtain and use one.
I doubt the current government will ever amend the law.

I would agree that 75% of Filipino's know little to nothing about their own government or its laws. A recent ABS poll showed that 73% of Filipino's don't know what type of government they have.
If you run a business or do any kind of thing that involves working with the government you will get a taste of corruption and lack of knowledge about the laws.
Basically the system works on second hand rumors and hearsay about laws ( even from the people who work for the government) and bribes. Government organizations make up stuff as they go with total disregard for what is actual written law.
I good example of this is the DFA. If you have a spouse and want a passport for your spouse you go to the DFA and apply. BUT since the spouse has a foreigner as partner the DFA will refuse to issue the passport until the applicant goes to either Cebu or Manila for a seminar and get a certificate from the CSA to show to the DFA. That is a made up requirement by the DFA and is illegal. Nothing in the Laws of the Philippines gives the DFA that authority. I challenged the Iloilo DFA and reported their behavior to the DFA Manila and the DOJ. I received a letter of apology and my wife's passport was sent via courier to our house. After we moved here I discovered that the Dumaguete DFA still practices this illegal requirement and people still make two and three trips to Cebu to get the CSA stamp and certificate in their spouses passport. You do not need the CSA certificate until you are trying to leave the Philippines with your spouse. The Passport law is very clear and concise. Every Filipino is entitled to a passport unless they are a convicted felon or are under prosecution for a felony. Nothing in that law states an exception if married to a foreigner.

    I don't know.
Again, thanks all for the great tips. Although I hate to move multiple times, we might be best off getting a place for a month or 2 then with boots on the ground looking for a 6 month - 1 year rental.
