Tapatalk recently decided that it would be a-ok to add a chat feature to their app and call it the "Official" Dumaguete Info chat room without giving any notice to me (or other forum admins). This chat room is also completely controlled by Tapatalk and I have absolutely no ability to moderate or turn off this feature. I take this as Tapatalk trying to hijack the forum and take content and discussions away from the main forums. This simply will not be tolerated.

On top of this they decided it would be a good idea to delete/moderate MY tirade posted in the "DI Chat Room" explaining my disgust for the feature being added without consent. This is a big no-go for me. The only people that should be able to moderate on this forum (and on any features claiming to be a part of DI) is the people I have assigned those privileges to and under NO circumstance should some nameless third-party person be able to moderate a forum owner's content.

    Tapatalk is banned.

I have made several changes to the forum rules due to recent issues I have been seeing. These changes are mainly concerning the Showcase section of the website. Here are the changes:

I have said most of this before elsewhere on the forum so none of this should come as any surprise. The only change to really take note of is how businesses are allowed to advertise and promote their business on the website:

All business listings, advertising and promotional posts MUST be made in, and only in, the Showcase section. When creating a Showcase item a forum thread will automatically be created in the appropriate forum sub-forum. The thread linked to a showcase thread is for general discussion about the business and also provide a place for businesses to reply to customer discussions (not to post promotional posts). All businesses are allowed to make one (1) promotional post per month in the Showcase comment section.

I will create a notice about this update on the forum so that everyone will see these changes.

Just noticed it's been a little over a year since the switch to the new forum software. Here are the monthly stats since the software changeover back in October of last year.

Blue line is how many overall posts there were per month.
Orange line is how many threads started per month.
Light Blue is how many users were active per month.

The totals for this one year period are:
    Total Posts: 23,793
    Total Threads: 6,945

    Some History On DI
@The Dane made the first post to DI more than 9 years ago back in October of 2006. The forum has changed hands a few times since and I took over the forum from @shadow back in September of last year.

DI hit both 10,000 threads and 100,000 posts in June of last year. (We've added more than 7k threads and 28k posts in a little more than a year!)

I'm very pleased with the steady upward trend in these stats and forum activity and want to say "thanks" to all the members who help keep this board active, friendly, inviting and useful to people looking for information about Dumaguete and the Philippines. Without the collective knowledge of the members here this forum would not be possible. Many thanks to all the members here on DI!

FYI: Users with less than 25 posts will not be able to hand out negative ratings. This should give new users some time to figure out certain posting "styles" and also prevent trolls from coming in and causing a lot of headache and extra work for moderators and myself.

As an expat for several years, I've been a member of several local forums, the majority of which are populated by 'Hooch's'. In the 1990's there was a popular alco-pop drink in the UK called 'Hooch' and the strap line was 'bitter & twisted'. I gave a colleague the Hooch nickname in my office because it suited him well! So - thankfully it is somewhat refreshing to note that I've yet to encounter any Hooch's here (yet).

I congratulate DI for a well moderated forum. I appreciate that not everyone shares the same views, opinions or outlook on life; if they did life would be very mundane indeed.

As a new resident of DC (well, Amlan to be precise) DI is an invaluable resource and I'm grateful for its existence. I am especially comforted by the willingness of members to help me out, share knowledge and provide a warm welcome.

There are 'Hooch's' everywhere. Thankfully they seem few and far here. I know you 'ain't gonna please everyone all of the time - but for me, I remain thankful that new friends and helpful advice is only a few clicks away. Keep up the good work...

    1. I think of all the people who post on here, Mr R shows no signs of any personality disorder - unless you think being honest and not afraid to speak your mind is a disorder. When we are being positive he can be very helpful - he will research topics and give his take in a way which shows he took it seriously and gave his time to help. When we are being negative, in the various ways that is possible, then he tells us. Nothing wrong with that - we can listen or not, it is our choice.

    2. As others have said, when asking something which can be misconstrued it is very important to indicate when something is a joke. The matter on which you wrote has legal consequences which those protective of this marvellous site would naturally want no part of. 99.9999999999999999% of us are in agreement with that. Sometimes I joke and do not make it clear enough, but I will do so more in future. But there are jokes ... and there are jokes.

    2. Is it not condescending to tell someone he needs another job? Mr R is a very successful expert in the field of electronic warfare - I think he "has another job".

    3. If any of us find we cannot cope with being on a Forum where people make a range of comments, then simply ban ourselves - just look and don't comment or just don't log on. From my perspective, I find this whole site to be incredible, the information within it extremely useful and I value it.

This one snuck up on me. The SSL certificate (which gives you the green "https" in the address bar) expires tomorrow. It usually takes a couple days to get the new one. Tonight I'll generate my own SSL cert and install it until they email me the new cert. The site will be just as secure but your browser won't agree with that and will show a security warning because I'm not an registered trusted agent....or some nonsense like that. I might decide to just go back to regular ol' http to avoid any user confusion.....if I can remember where I put all those redirects to https a year ago.

Sorry about that. I thought I had until the 12th for some reason.

I think we could hold off on the meet until after Christmas. How does the 27th sound?
